Repair of a couple of washing machines, Gorenje and Miele

Even though electric blankets have been around a long time, my Wife and I still prefer to place a couple of hot water bottles under the covers an hour or so before we go to bed. Old school technology, but its a nice comfort, and costs nothing to provide.

Well... I don't know, I don't know. I’m not ready to go that far for comfort. Still, we live in the electric age, not in the age of steam and sailboats.

The brown plaque has been destroyed. Dried soap, organic, mixed with microfibers from fabrics. I believe this is what gives the specific smell of an old washing machine. Or, if you forget to take out the washed laundry and it rots in the drum.

The old school I know is to send your wife to bed half an hour earlier. I know people who put their dogs under the covers.

The bearings are not noisy. Large inertial run-out of the drum. I will change the bearings and seal preventively, so as not to remember about them for a long, long time. The washing powder supply tubes, tray and other small items take an ultrasonic bath, there is a bacterial mat. The machine is perfectly clean inside the stationary drum. No scale. This is the first time I have seen such a condition. In southern Austria, apparently there is good water with a normal pH.

I was too lazy to remove the non-noisy bearings, but I forced myself. And I was not mistaken. Everything has a service life, 37 years is a period. The shaft sleeve is made of stainless steel and has a groove. Drum cross made of magnetic material. I wonder why it didn't rot???

When there is no blank for turning a new sleeve for the oil seal, you need to try to make a sleeve out of nothing.

I need to get +1 mm on the diameter by surfacing CuAl bronze on a piece of stainless pipe.

Turning will show cleanliness and whether there are shells. There was a layer of rubber under the old sleeve. I didn't expect this. A simple repair did not work.

Let's do it in a more complicated way. My lathe has a gap, which is good news.

Sleeve run-out 0.16 mm. I think we need to stop. A little polishing, sealing the ring sample with epoxy resin and the washing machine is ready to be assembled. It will be tomorrow...

The bottom line is: 2 washing machines.


1) Gorenje, which was in terrible condition, will wash socks and dirty work clothes.

2) Miele will go home tomorrow.

We spent approximately 50 euros on 4 bearings and 2 seals.


3) Beko dishwasher: just total cleaning/prevention and disassembly of the front door.

4) AEG oven - removal of 2 heating elements for ease of operation and mega total cleaning inside, welding of a broken grill and ultrasonic cleaning of 2 baking sheets.


All the equipment was taken from special sites “we’ll give it away for free”; I’m too lazy to pay for disposal.

The estimated savings when purchasing this list of equipment for money, but with the status “working, used” is approximately 500-700 euros.

When purchasing new white equipment of the same class, you save at least 2,000 euros.

PS - Downshifting continues. you need to build a normal kitchen out of nothing + minimal costs for luxury.

Would I like to do such repairs for money for clients? In short - NO.

The old Bosch will get new bearings and be used for cleaning rags and overalls.
The new cheapo Beko will do the normal weekly washes.
I'd not be surprised if the old Bosch lasts another 20 years and the Beko turns its toes up within three or four.

All the old washing machines that I have seen had wear on the sleeve on the shaft. Therefore, replacing only the bearings and oil seal will extend the life of the washer, but not for long. The sleeve needs to be changed.

The old master told me that old Bosch washing machines (like Miele) have a sleeve mounted on the shaft through a rubber tube (just a press fit).

If I had known, I would have gently heated the sleeve with an industrial thermo gun until the old rubber flowed and turned into a little smoke. Then, the sleeve could be removed and not use a lathe, not everyone has a large gap.
