Renault code reader.

I am likely to get two cars with faults soon. 05 Scenic dci and 07 Kangoo dci.

I am treading new gound in this stuff, so can any of you Gods of Analysis point me out a code reader?

The Scenic occasionally missfires with black smoke and the Kangoo has duff ABS. I am assuming the Scenic has a electronic prob, as it is intermitant. Likely use one of those refurb outfits in UK for both the black boxes.

I was surprised by the £10 code reader I got from ebay, it did not go into the depths of explanations like an expensive unit but certainly told me what was causing the fault.

This was quite a result considering my days of car repairs have been left behind and the only fault finder I previously had was the two things stuck either side of my head.

The cheap ELM 327 OBD scanners on eBay and Amazon will only read engine codes. I have paid as little as £3.99 for one. But the QC is dire and it is 50/50 if they work! The first one I bought didn't and it caused every warning light and error message to display. Fortunately I had a more expensive one to plug in and reset them.

If you need to read and reset gearbox, SRS, ABS etc then you need a much more expensive one and they are more vehicle specific.

Jaguar Forum chaps usually point to the iCarSoft 930i from the above source. There seems to be many Renault ones to choose from, but I have no personal experience to guide you. I suggest you sign up a Renault Forum and check their stickies.

I have a bluetooth one from ebay that uses a phone/tablet app called Torque, an essential during my brief period as a renault owner.
Only basic functions for engine managment, not covering ABS etc. Pops the codes up, clears them, an amount of live data available too. Great for a £10 or so.

Get a delphi scanner, its a neat bit of kit... Cheap clones on ebay...
