Removing rust from bench.

I've just acquired a large welding bench, its 10' by 12'. However its very rust.

I was going to DA it down or flap wheel but wondered if there is a quicker/better way.

Heres a very bad pic but you get the idea.

Rent a floor sander/polisher. You can get them with 24" (I think) heads on them and varying degrees of abrasive discs.

7" sander with a 36 grit fibre disk would be my choice, they flex unlike a flap disk and wont dig in, a DA will take for ever unless its very light rust.

Out of interest how think is the top on that?

7" fibre disc, 24 grit, on a backing pad, double up the disc to make it stiffer.

Does a quick job. Want a mask on mind

Only half inch/12mm with lots of supports, bet its around 1.4 tonnes total though.

Looks like the way i'll go then, just wasn't sure if it'd leave a bad finish.

It will soon smooth itself out, need plenty of antispatter on it for a bit mind

This rust paint is very hard tuff paint, it can take a lot of heat and comes in black. It will make it very easy and save time so you can start more welding.

You could either use it for the legs only or paint the whole table.

No use on a benchtop though, ok for the legs and frame.
