Removing rear quarter panel

Hi, just joined, have a few projects on the go and thought you guys might be able to help

i want to remove the rear quarter panel on my Mitsubishi Evo 6 so i can cut out the inner panels, thing is i need to then re-attach the panel.

any tips of removing the quarter panels?

how would i remove the spot welds if i need to re-spot weld them after?

OR, is this a daft question because the obvious answer is simply to spot weld the quarter panel back on using slightly different locations for the spot welds??

just get a spotweld removing drill bit they only remove the steel from the top panel and not the panel they are attached to look at machine mart they sell them.

why would you want to remove rear quater cant you do it from inside the car

unfortunitally you can't get access to the metal from inside the car as there is an excessive roll cage in place and the inside panel hides the 'inner panel' rather well.

removing the rear quater is no small job, when it comes to replacing it you will have disturbed all the sealed joints and have to make sure you dont distort the panel is it actually worth it, do you hve the experience (without wanting to insult you judging from you first post you dont) if you dont it could become a real mess and ruin the car

you make a fare point regarding my ability, i've only really done work on older cars that were 'rotters' that it didn't matter how it looked.

however, the car is a race car and weight loss is a nessary evil. my brother and his mate however are more than capable of cutting and replacing body panels, so it'll be them doing it BUT i just like to get the info so i sould like i understand what i'm doing.

then you need a spot weld removing drill bit that way you just mig up the old spot weld when you re-assemble

Hi,im sure that removing the inner panels is not the way to save weight.The panels are involved in the structural integrety of most cars.
Race scrutiners may take a dim view to such weakening of the cars structure!

If you must then as already said spot weld drills are the way forward.

you wont realistly remove the quarter and be able to reuse it , it wont just lift off after drilling the welds

I've used panels from scrappers to repair cars without any problems from quarter panels to rear and scuttle sections and even a roof once, as long as you are careful you can reuse them. I can't see his logic in removing the reinforcing from the shell even though the roll cage will be doing part of it's job
