Removing paint from beams

Strip the bulk of the paint that comes off reasonably easy then sand what it doesn't touch would be my method.
Nasty stuff in old paint dust. Good extraction is worth investing in if you do sand through it.

Its a right royal pain in the posteriour doing rough beams, I did a load in our very first house then swore i would never ever do it again

I used mat osmo poly x hard wax on daughters oak doors and brought the grain up real nice

Used some Osmo stuff on our table and mantle (spalted beech). Expensive but genuinely worth it, great stuff.

I’m tempted to go for the clear as surely that will darken it from a freshly sanded finish and if it’s no good in the future I could re do it with something darker I suppose

We're not fans of colouring in wood so normally go for something that is very honest in what it does to the wood. This is the one we went for:

The wife did all the work whilst I did all the prep. She says to do multiple very light coats rather than a heavier coat. The latter results in a white finish that's not nice (for us anyway). Takes a bit of work and you do have to get stuck in but the results are excellent, durable and long-lasting. The mantle, which is far too grotty to take a photo of, could do with a re-coat this summer. That's two years of high use and heat from a 4KW stove directly underneath.

Not cheap but worth it.

No. Categorically the opposite. It's designed to keep the wood as light and as close to raw looking as possible. There is a white pigment in it so it'll never darken.

ah maybe not the stuff for me then as id like a medium dark colour. would be nice if i could build it up with layers so i don't over do it

They should have another one in the range that will do it Phil. Their stuff is expensive but really worth it. I think a 125ml can was a tenner delivered but from that we have done a 5' x 2' tabletop twice, a mantle 6' x 1' x 3" once but all multiple coats and a still have a fantastic finish. I think roughly a third of the can is left still.

im currently leaning towards just using danish oil and applying coats until i have the colour i want - unless im oversimplifying something here?

Danish oil is clear so no matter how many coats it will still be clear with a satin finish

What bs says. Multiple coats won't really take it much deeper than the very first does (which can be quite a lot). They will, however, make the protection greater and the lustre deeper.

I think,,,,, you should start investigating the new antique wood finishes that are out there,,, you can make wood look like it's beautifully aged,,, be sure to take the little woman with you,,,

For the oak fire place lintel I used the same stuff we used on the kitchen bench. Settles to a nice colour and just st soaks in.

Id have done the mantle, but the rest.....nah leave painted.

true, however it does grow darker over time, more of a golden hew especially visible on lighter woods, pine etc. you don't notice it so much on the harder woods, looks good though. I'm a big fan of it..

I stripped one beam on a ceiling at home with paint stripper , never again . A guy that does a bit of grit blasting for me does a lot of oak framed barns but they are at the construction stage and not lived in, cant see how you could contain the mess using this method unless one of the recirc jobbies could do it.
