Im not sure if this is the relevant sub forum but I'm interested on stripping some old oak beams back to bare wood for aesthetic reasons. It appears that some of the beams are non original and have a single coat of gloss paint on them whilst others were probably painted black a long long time ago and repainted in all sorts of different colours over the years.
There are companies which specialise in this and will use techniques ranging from sand blasting (would need an empty house) to media blasting using crushed ice, to chemicals and hand stripping.
Do you think its worth me giving it a go myself before possibly calling on professional help? Im not shy of a bit of hard work but if its going to take weeks then i don't really want to waste my entire christmas doing it!
Heres a few pictures of what I'm dealing with:
although pretty much every room has painted woodwork of some sort. I imagine back in the day beas were painted black to preserve them but why you would paint beams in this day and age i can't wrap my head around
