removing jacobs chuck from MT2 taper

What benefit does it have for center drills. Unless they are too long for the chuck

Centre drills are short with very little shank to grip. Drilling the chuck lets them into the chuck further as the tip of the drill goes into the hole.

That's a good enough tip that I might get round to doing my various chucks. One day. Some time in the future.

My taper chucks have a through hole to tap them off from the front.

Does the taper have a drawbar thread or a tang? You could use a spacer and pull a threaded taper out.

To add to your excellent suggestion in the case of a tanged arbor, drill through the tang, poke through a pin and jack it off in the same way.

If really stuck, tap the through hole for a grease nipple and pump it off (fill cavity with oil beforehand so it does not become a missile).

An open question to all: what if it is a keyless chuck which cannot have a through hole drilled in it?

If the arbor is scrap then simply holding the chuck body and tapping the arbor about half way along will release it. Use something round and fairly hard in order to make it ring, it'll soon come off.

oh but it did and i beat the carp out of it

now i have beaten it to withing a inch of its life the chusk is now so hard to turn to tighten!
I think I will revert to my previous thoughts and drill theough the chuck

You are sure someone hasn't made a taper to fit a screw on chuck? Just asking.

Could be screw on, could have been arbor in the freezer, chuck in the oven before being fitted together.

I think I'll leave them be and keep them for the lathe. And find another with no insert.

I had one of those that simply would not come of using all the methods previously suggested. I finished up chopping off the MT arbour at the chuck with a grinder, gripped the chuck in the lathe, drilled out most of the arbour but left the deepest part intact. That gave me something for the punch to work against when I punched out the remains of the arbour through the hole in the rear of the chuck.

I just bought a new chuck.

This too... sometimes you have to decide what's worth saving and what's worth chucking.

That arbor is so mullered, that personally I'd have drilled it through and bolted it, or welded a big washer or something on it, so you could have something to wedge off of, and saved the chuck that way.
Could have even put in a couple of threaded holes and used jacking bolts.

Arbors are so cheap that it's not worth trying to save or re-use them... new chuck? New arbor...

Even chinese arbors are round enough for us mere mortals, and they act as a nice protective device if you do something stupid in the drill - they'll bend first, and save the chuck or the quill from damage.

is the Jacobs taper on chuck the right number there's about 4 different sizes of taper

May not work, but have you tried clamping a nut within the jaws, & winding a bolt through the nut to try pressing it out? Gradual pressure can sometimes succeed where whacking away won't.
