That is interesting. I could get some methanol and try it. I'm going to try Oven Pride oven cleaner. This is basically Sodium Hydroxide with thickener and strong surfactants.
I do not have much experience of removing paint with a paint stripping chemical so maybe others on here know the best way to do it. I have this old vintage sewing machine, unfortunately someone had decided to repaint it with Hammerite hammer finish paint, it does not look good. I want to remove all of this paint and the remaining japanning underneath. After reading on these forums that modern paint strippers from local shops do not work any more I have gone for using some Dichloromethane. So far the results are not very successful. First off I tried just brushing it on but it quickly just evaporates away so I have now been using some strong plastic bags to cover the small parts and pouring in the DCM so that it is completely submerged and then seal the top to stop evaporation, giving it an hour submerged, this is somewhat an improvement but not very effective and does not touch the original japanning. It seems nothing like the videos on YouTube. The Redoka DCM is reported to be 99.9%, it thin like water, not a gel. My question is how do you use this stuff? do you have to mix it with another chemical to make it more active?
