This thread is of great interest to me. My milling machine is covered in awful silver hammerite, in some places really thickly. I've got to get it off.
I got some dichloromethane from eBay too. I mixed it or gelled it with vaseline to make it stick. It's worked a bit on the thinner hammerite but hasn't touched the thick stuff.
I think hot sodium hydroxide or "lye" works well. Dennis Aspo on here has used it on his Deckel mill and I may well give it a go.
