I'd be tempted to try grit blasting if you've a large area to clean.Timely thread, I just bought another house abandoned project and its made of stone, and apparently the owner/builder who cut in some new windows and put some lintels in thought it was acceptable to glue the removed stone back in with expanding foam!
Flat spade works good for digging it out and prising the stones out from it, but I'll be testing the chemical solutions mentioned here for cleaning the stone back up before mixing up a lime mortar and putting them back in properly.

There's two types of expanding foam I believe, open cell and closed cell, many years ago a mate bought a merc 508 van and it was insulated behind the ply with open cell foam, it just rotted out everything, as it soaks up water like a sponge and holds it there. Professional spay foam people use closed cell, stuff out of can is open.
