Removing Conifers

Some daft sod...

Planted a dam load of conifers similar to leylandi around the house some 8 years ago or so and now we want to remove the 8 in front of the house, all trunks are from 6-8 inch thick.

I ripped out two a year ago with help of a shogun once cut to a stump but now the others are behind a low wall so need lifting out.

I will make a lifting frame/gantry but wonder what size block and tackle to use, i have a small 1.2 ton one but i cant see that working

So question what size would do the job once i have dug around the base a bit as i did before.

do you have the trunk still attached if so s dig and rock lose if not Your better off using 2 pulleys or multi pulleys to pull it out

Borrow a Tirfor winch, attach the wire rope high on the tree and pull them over.
Axe through the roots as they become exposed.
Best to wait until the ground is good and wet.

I took some out for my brother. Cut off 5 foot from the ground, and 1.5 ton digger. Digging and rocking. And hour and a half for 6

We sell root cutters at work, basically a wideish blade on a spade handle. Can't think why i've never thought of making one in the past, because I bet they're way easier to use than an axe especially if you have to work at a decent depth.

Do the stumps actually need to come out completely? Being next to a wall it may be better to grind them out rather than risk damaging the wall.

I did similar but used a hired sabre saw with the the nine inch long rough cut wood blades, five extra blades saw off nine trees with trunks of around 10 inch diameters including cutting them up into 10 inch logs .
Leaving most of the roots in the ground to rot and make fairy rings in six or so years time .

Buy some stump rot / stump killer such as SBK or sulphamate / sulphamet crystals off eBay cut the top of any thick root or stump with a deep cross or drill out big root ends with an auger then fill the hole with crystals or SBK & diesel or paraffin .

It's easier than using an axe or a spade and also a lot safer unless you cut the lower branches off before using your axe .


I got the idea from a woman who I saw using a sabre saw to take out some big rose bushes and added my own Aldi ( £ 10 ish ) 1.5 tonne hand ratchet draw wire winch as my own idea , cos I'm crippled and cannot do any axe swinging or pushing or pulling anymore .

Made a six x 1 mtr leg daisy chain style field anchor some six metres long from several lengths of 3 inch rusty black iron welded bits of chain ( auction buy ). Linked on the legs with cheap 2 tonne carabiners & used 900 mm x 19 mm rebar for the anchor pins having welded on two cross bars of 2 " angle iron on each pin . ( 14 or so pins in total that I'd put a four sided point on each of them using my angle grinder . )

I have chainsaws etc and a log burner so your trees could go to a good home....

If you can’t get a stump grinder. Dig round the stump then cut it below ground level, treat with poison and back fill. I personally wouldn’t remove the stumps when they are so close to a wall

cut some down a few years back, left the stumps about 3 foot tall, they rot out really quite quick,then pull out byhand easily, left mine about 3 years.the height left makes it easy to rock them about to pull out,it would be the safest way not to damage the wall.Arther

Okey doke, will be cut back to just beow wall height though, about 2 foot high and left to rot etc.

Save me faffing ripping them out and not in the way.
