it may help someone wanting to strip powder coatings and paint of wheels ect . using methylene chloride .methanol and hydrochloric acid in a tank . apparently removes it in about 20 mins and can be easily vapourblasted or cleaned off

Is there any need for air fed breathing gear? Wheel refinishing place close to me used to use something like that, and needed full breathing gear................they use some water based stuff now, which appears to be a lot less nasty.

That sounds about right, I was using a Methylene Chloride based stripper in my youth to strip a motorcycle frame, I went to take a sip of my mug of tea and there was a lump of stripper floating on the top. Stupidly I fished the stripper out and drank the tea, felt like I tripping, really spaced out for about 30 minutes!

The good ol' EU has banned methylene chloride from diy paint strippers. I bought a few small cans of paint stripper in the local hardware and found it was absolutely useless, it is a fraud under the trade descriptions act, a paint stripper that won't strip paint. Anyway i read the label and it was full of the usual crap, under EU law this product is now methylene chloride free.

There's a product on the market called Atlas-T which is a mixture of methylene chloride and hydrofluoric acid. You need to keep it covered to prevent evaporation, you can't use a film of water like you can with neat methylene chloride.

PS Methylene chloride is brilliant at stripping insulation off cable, no need to burn it. It works with rubber and most PVC type insulation.

Yes found the exact same thing. Got some from Ebay, which seemed a lot like old type Nitromors, and works fine.

Just be careful if using methylene chloride or Dichloromethane as its commonly known, it's a highly effective paint striper but it's also carcinogenic, hence why it's not used in Nitromors any more.

It's also heavier than air so if you do manage to find some and have comp air breathing stuff, make sure your comp air intake is well off the the ground

I bought about 10 gallon of hydrofluoric acid for cleaning the stone on the house, I had a full body chemical suit, double gloves the works but I was still cr@pping myself when I used it. In the end I got the house sandblasted and sold the acid to the guy who blasted it.
He tested it before buying it by pouring it out of a gallon container into a tiny bottle cap and refused to use gloves. When I asked him whether he knew that it reacted with calcium in muscles and a splash on bare skin can cause a heart attack, he said yes, he had lost his nails to it before and was kept under surveillance in a heart unit overnight after splashing some on him. When he poured the cap onto stone he mentioned if was good stuff, what a muppet!

I learnt about that when i did rally rescue, some under bonnet rubber components can produce the acid when heated in a fire.
