Removing Bush from blind hole.

Hello all first post here - really enjoy the forum.

I have an end plate of a starter motor with a bronze bush in it. What would the best way of removing it be?

Here is a picture I found of the plate with the bush removed. Its a starter of a ferguson 20 to be exact.

Find yourself a piece of round bar that is a good but not tight fit in the bush, fill the bush and hole with grease, push the bar in and with it supported on a block of hardwood directly behind the bush strike it with a hammer, hopefully the hydraulic pressure will drive the bush outwards,

Might be a long shot....but

If you could find a bolt big enough, and a tap to suit. You would also need to find a piece of tubing with I.D slightly larger than the bushes O.D
Then you try tapping the bushing. Place the tubing over the blind hole. Screw in the screw and it will pull out the bushing providing the screws not too long and the threads are strong enough.

I'd try the hydraulic punch method but you could also braze a fixing onto the bush and get slide hammer on there...?
Another technique I've used for blind bearing removal is to weld a bolt into the centre, fitted a large socket over the bolt/bearing and withdrawn the lot with a nut washer combo over the socket.

Heat helps too but don't melt the wires!

Bearing pullers work from one side. Would need to be a bit of a lip on the back of the bushing.

Find a bolt that fits tight and thread it in. Then pull.

This is my preferred method, provided there isn't an oil hole in the rear of the casting.

Do it outside, wear goggles, hat and scarf or let someone else do it!

Grease and a close-fitting rod is what I'd try first. If the didn't work I'd tap a thread into the bush, screw in a heavy bolt then hang the end-plate over a heat source with the bush underneath - it'll drop out when it gets hot.

If the above does not work then you could use a Dremmel or similar fitted with a small milling cutter and cut two groves the length of the bush 180 degrees to each other. The bush should collapse on its self and be easy to remove with pliers. Slight scoring of the housing should not affect the replacement bush.

ive used this method to remove an outer race of a bearing that shattered.

worked well and quite quick too but instead of a milling cutter i used a small circle saw cutter suplied with the dremmel

A very simple and easy method is to drill two holes in the back of the casting in line with the bush, drift out as per normal. Fill holes with a spot of silicon to stop water when the job is complete, easy and effective.

Go for the gease and round bar - I've done it heaps of times and it works like a charm.

Thanks for all replys. I haven't had time to do anything with it yet, but that sounds like a good idea with the grease and round bar. I have a bush set ordered so when they come i'll try it.
