Reminder- Eye Wash!

Felt a bit silly earlier. I got cement grinding debris in one of my eyes. Extreme pain then I realised the eye wash had been thrown out some time ago.

So waited until Tesco opened at 1pm and got a bottle.

A reminder to any DIY types. Check if you habe eye wash and bath at home and if its still in date etc. If not order one NOW and don't get caught out.

1/2 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of clean water makes up diy eyewash .....

boiled then cooled water will do , distilled / de ionised is best , but in a pinch boiled and then cooled will get you by.

An opened eye wash has a very limited shelf life to stay sterile.

A pinch of borax powder is all you need in a 1/4 pint of cooled boiled water it can save the day for you . Usually there will be cool boiled water in the kettle that is sterile enough .

I suggest you don't get a massive bottle 250 or 500 ml , get three or four small long use by date phials.

Borax is also a very very effective ants nest destroyer ..it prevent them making & milking fungal juices to feed newly hatched ants in the nest so it dies out from not getting replacement ants

We had something like this in a place i worked, single use bottles so no worries about opened bottles left too long.

I got a box (50 i think) of little one-use saline pods for eye washing, I always kept a few in the car for the odd occasion needed, these are totally sterile and very handy

Same price as above when I got mine. Its worth also getting a big bottle for when you may sometime get a difficult to remove bit of debris.


Essential part of a first aid kit and we should all have some IMO. Anyone that uses a grinder or chainsaw.

Quite often get chainsaw dust in my eyes but rarely need an eye wash, tho if I kept them more accessable I would!

Connifer chips BURN 10-30 minutes for the irritation to stop. Thats using safety specs and a.mesh visor! Always gets through somehow.

Googles. And use them.

I've got some uvex ones that fit, with care, over my specs. Bit more careful needed getting them off.

Had to visit a&e twice in 40 yrs to get crap out of my eye, so goggles got bought ten years ago, no relying on just safety specs.

I would get laughed at when putting on goggles and ear defenders when doing a bit of grinding, the others just seem to rely on the "safety squint"

One of my quirks (I've been told I have more than 1) is that I always wear eye protection when grinding stuff or hitting things with hammers (in case of shrapnel).

What's surprising is that I'm very lax about protecting my other vital bits so it's not that I'm safety conscious, it's more that I'm very protective about my eyes.

Egg cup or a desert spoon works a treat to get the solution in the eye.

Or if your at the beach with no tools or equipment…..get some one to lick your eye lids then eye ball.

Is this something you have personal experience of? I go to the beach fairly often and can't imagine ever being that desperate...

I've also been told you can ask strangers to help if you have been stung by jelllyfish at the beach but that might be an urban legend (best not Google it on a works computer !)

Yes. About 30 years ago I was on the beach at Hauxley with my kids. Sand in the eyes of my son. Old woman who Ive known all my life, was a friend of my fathers, as her family also have a holiday home there says to me, lick it. And she demonstrated. Happy kid, no sand in the eyes of my son. About a year ago, I was up there with the Grandson, bumps into her daughter, while we were chatting she did the same to her granddaughter. Bit better than someone weeing in your eye to flush it out.

After a few visits to A&E over the years for bits in the eye, I Always put fully enveloping goggles on ( over glasses) before grinding anything, even for a moment.

I'm a goggles convert too after a trip to hospital last weekend to remove a tiny speck of grit from my eye.

Probably stupid of me but I tried eye baths for 5 days before seeking medical help as I thought it must have been washed out and the remaining scratchiness just needed time to heal Took the medic longer to find the antibiotic gel in their cupboard than it did to remove particle and dye/examine the eye. Despite the 3 hour wait on a Sunday evening, great service, 5-stars, would use again

Lesson learnt - eye baths don't always remove debris.

I've got an eye bath like an oval egg cup.
You add cooled boiled water, pinch of salt and hold it against your eye.

It seals against your eye socket and you put your head back and slosh the mixture across your eye ball, whilst looking in all directions. Blinking will help dislodge something.

You used to get a big squeezy bottle of saline with an eye cup attached to the top but they don't seem to be available now.
