I still need a boot manager so I can access my Linux partitions. I know that virtualising works, but it adds latency and overheads,

id do a hard drive copy of what i have onto a new hard drive
test to make sure is working first for a few days
then update the hard drive that ive just made a copy from its an old hard drive probably been hammered
and then test away
this is the way id do it if i wanted to try something out as i have old drives not being used i can test them another way

I'd probably have a go at virtualizing them too. Latency? Yeah A little as all the hardware it thinks it can see isn't actually real, so it'll never be as quick as a dedicated PC. But for me it saves the whole headache of boot partitions/grub etc not working and the time spent faffing with linux getting it to work.
No probs with win 10 sat alongside kubuntu on my laptop. UEFI installer for both and GRUB2 handles everything without issue. As GRUB resides on the kubuntu HDD Windows doesn't touch it during any of it's updates.
Can you do that??

Yes, that's how I figured it. Give Win 10 exclusive use of the HDD it's installed on and leave GRUB on a different HDD.

My Lenovo Yoga laptop is slowly dying so bought a refurbished Chromebook. I only need it for passing time on my weekly commute, but running Linux is a must so I can develop my home automation code. The Win10 laptop was a pain in that respect, I had Ubuntu running in a VM, originally the Microsoft Hyper-V which was let down by crazy networking, followed by Oracle Virtual box which was far better until the anti malware software screwed it up. I got that fixed then the battery died, so I replaced that, worked for a week now it boots when it feels like it if you hold various buttons down for an extended period. I may rebuild the laptop into a dedicated Linux touchscreen machine for fun.
Evidently you can run Linux on a Chromebook, I shall let you know how it goes. I just need Python, Redis a web server and a couple of micro server frameworks so shouldn't be too hard.......

I thought win 10 was great...until a month ago when it started acting up...difficulty booting.
To prevent issues I switched off bitlocker on the boot drive...it crashed and then locked the data drives and I couldn't find the bitlocker keys anywhere.
In the end I had to recover from my cloud backup of the data drive...I still have no clue why it all happened in the first place!
Day to day usability is better on Win 10...and my issue was probably hardware compounded by my poor storage of the keys

Yes. You'll need space on another drive/partition for the image of Windows 7 to be created.

The chromebook arrived, I'm using it now, I must say I'm impressed so far. I bought a refurbished one as I wanted to save a bit of cash and get a better spec. Its an Acer spin 13 with an i5, 8GB RAM and 128G SSD which is close to top end for a Chromebook but I wanted to run Linux too. It runs a flavour of Debian Linux in a container within a VM and everything I need so far just works. I think sound/video was its weakness from a Linux perspective, but that was mid last year so may be fixed now. It also has a touchscreen with a Wacom pen, only played with that bit so far but seems OK, this wasn't the primary reason I bought it but may prove useful to entertain the kids and do the odd sketch of ideas I very occasionally get. The Screen is excellent, battery life is very good so far too. I must say I'm not missing Windows much and I thought I would.

Well. I've bought the SSD (a 500Gb WD Blue M2 job), fitted it, formatted it and it's now awaiting the delivery of an eBay Windows 10 DVD and licence key...
In other news, I upgraded the wife's desktop PC from Win 7 to Win 10 using the method outlined below and it was all done and dusted in just over an hour. Quite impressed.

From thousands of repositories around the globe.
Linux distributions come with a large variety of applications, some command line only especially if you are building a server, or graphical if you want a desktop. To add to them there are command line and graphical package managers, I guess the equivelent to google playstore, but they have been around for much longer.
So how do you get Microsoft office or Cura. Etc.

I don't with Microsoft Office, I use Libra Office or Google docs instead, but I believe its coming.
Cura is available for Linux. If you were using a debian based Linux distribution like Ubuntu, the command line would something like "apt-get install cura" or use a graphical package manager.

The Win 10 DVD arrived today, so I started the install. Kept on getting to the point where you tell the installer what partition you want to use, and it fails with a 'Can't find the partition' type message. Scratched my head, Googled about and found a reference to setting the SSD drive as boot drive in BIOS. Followed that advice, and it installed as sweet as you like. My Win 7 and Linux partitions are untouched and unmolested and I have a working Win 10 install (using it to write this post). The only (minor) issue is that GRUB can't detect the Win 10 OS and add it to the boot menu, but that's easily dealt with.
Bit of a result, I think.
