Amother vote for a toyota or pug diesel. I have had both in the past and wife has a pug at present. All have been reliable with decent mileage and not too expensive on tax or insurance. For the bucks I would probably go witht the pug though.

I'll give another vote for the pug diesel.

The old chap has had them as company cars for the last 15 or so years. We've had five in that time and only ever had minor issues with them (a 309, two 306's and two 307's). I'm pretty certain that even the early ones we had are still on the road and they all left us with nearly 150k on the clock. Non-turbo ones aren't exactly quick but they do handle pretty well and should be pretty cheap.

In Zaf the Nissans are known for their reliable petrol engines (diesels are a little dicy). The toyotas chew oil afte some Kms, esp the 1.3/1.6/1.8 petrol motors. The Jap cars are reliable, but as said, you pay the premium. As mentioned, for that price a Pug diesel is a good bet. The Cits offer pug diesels at half the price. I'm not an Alfa fan. Rather, I loath them. It is more a matter of looking for cars that got their act together, but still suffer from a bad reputation. Alfa is maybe not super reliable, but they do fall in that category to a certain extent. The Xantia/ZX/Xsara Cits most definitely.

Although my renault master (yes the old slab shaped one that the driveshafts explode into pieces at 30,000 miles if you listen to the naysayers) currently has the odometer stuck on 254,000...

That'll be the one with the UN1 gearbox that was so good, Lotus used it in the late model Esprit.
Always fancied a Master minibus to do a camper conversion on, but the only time I ever went to bid on one (an ex-nursing home job with 80K but absolutely immaculate) I never even got to bid as it was double my budget after four bids...

Toyota, if you want off road. You could get a good old Hilux for 1.5k. My old one had 287000 miles on it, engine and gearbox good as gold - it was the mountings holding the cab on that decided it's fate (and the radio had given up... a killer).

Utterly reliable beastie.
