Hi, I need to put a 5-10mm bend along the edges of a 1mm sheet metal piece, Iv'e made a box which measures 500 x 125mm and need to make a lid for it.

Very much appreciate any advice thanks, should say I only have a fairly large engineer vice

Use a bender. If not available use a piece of bar with a suitable edge, clamp metal to be bent on it, with a flat bar to hold it flat, then peen the edge over gradually with a hammer, or a block of wood and a hammer.

This thread appeared and disappeared earlier today.

In the original ghosted one, someone else suggested clamping the sheet between two pieces of angle iron. Clamp the outboard ends of the angle to stop it flapping about.

A tool as shown in the still at the start of this video will also do it, and will work on curves as well:

For what you want, a 5mm deep cut into the end of the bar rather then the side (see where his left hand is) would be easier to use.

you can fold 1mm sheet in a vice easy enough with line and do a gentle fold and move along to the other side and start the fold there then move again this is just to start the bend where you want it then with a little bit of welding you weld the edges

Bends "near" the edge of a sheet are harder.

"Near" is a distance relative to the equipment to hand.

If you run into troubles, you may consider bending further from the edge, and then trimming the bent metal to size after bending.

One thing nobody has mentioned is that, unless you use pan folder (or similar) that lip will stretch. This will result in the lid being bowed unless you can shrink the lip, either with a shrinker or using some clever hammering techniques.
