regulator seat cracked - replaceable?

I finally got the mig my mate lent me sorted, put the regulator on the bottle and... Loads of gas escaping up the regulator thread.

I checked the contact with some engineers blue, nice even ring contact, then as I wiped it clean, spotted two thin lines left behind... He reckons the last to borrow it was a bit of.an animal, and it looks to me like he overtightened the reg and cracked the seat. ****. I suspect the bottle's a "stray" so can't call up BOC and complain...

I can probably PTFE tape around it to get the leak to a manageable hiss, but wondered if the seat's replaceable, there's a hexagon for a key but I don't want to let the 200 bar gas out all in one go! Are the seat's available, or would I be looking at making one on t'lathe? It's on the reg side of the valve, can't see that it can be holding anything against pressure, so..

Christ, seriously, don't go messing with that. Not worth risking your life for saving a few quid on gas. Sounds highly dangerous.

Not a good idea to put engineers blue on the valve seat either.

Back away..VERY QUICKLY if you have never seen a gas cylinder go, take it from at least one of us on here, you DO NOT want to be anywhere near.

In fact take it to a BOC dealer, so it doesn't fall into some ones hands with less sense than yourself

I wouldnt even move it tbh, ring BOC on their 24 hour line, tell them it is a dangerous bottle and they will collect it.

Any damage to the valve, however slight makes the thing seriously dangerous.

Ummm, I'm not talking about a cracked.valve, calm down! If you look in the reg socket of a bottle,.there's the tapered seat for the reg - a separate piece,.presumably so the bottle and valve aren't wrecked by ham-fisted morons overtightening... It's not the valve itself or any part.of its operation, but as you're.all so adamant I'll not investigate further!

I'll leave it alone, and slowly bleed the gas off through the reg threads... I have once seen a hydrogen bottle fall over and crack the valve out, it had a run up at the *first* brick wall it went through, and the.Ford Escort...

Regardless of what is damaged on the bottle Dave, it's not for messing with. On a side note. Using PTFE tape on bottles is a BIG no no.

Yeh leave well alone bad enough with argosheild due to the pressure and an absolute f*****g no no with oxygen iv seen a bull blowen RBO leading to a bottle blowing and bananna peeling, friend was seriously injured
