I finally got the mig my mate lent me sorted, put the regulator on the bottle and... Loads of gas escaping up the regulator thread.
I checked the contact with some engineers blue, nice even ring contact, then as I wiped it clean, spotted two thin lines left behind... He reckons the last to borrow it was a bit of.an animal, and it looks to me like he overtightened the reg and cracked the seat. ****. I suspect the bottle's a "stray" so can't call up BOC and complain...
I can probably PTFE tape around it to get the leak to a manageable hiss, but wondered if the seat's replaceable, there's a hexagon for a key but I don't want to let the 200 bar gas out all in one go! Are the seat's available, or would I be looking at making one on t'lathe? It's on the reg side of the valve, can't see that it can be holding anything against pressure, so..
