Refurbing my car alloys

To pass a bit of time and cheap job to do i have decided to refurb the wheels on my kit car, i am stuck between to either rattle can silver or gold, my first choice at the minute is to go with silver, but unsure pf what the silver paint is like. I have taken them back to bare ally and broke the bead off so i can get to the inner edge of the wheels aswell, dont want to take the tyres off as i cant afford to.

So has anyone used the silver rattle cans and should i use an etching primer or would you say its not worth it really?

if you have gone back to bare metal then you need etch primer, then primer, then paint.

i have om occasion got rattle cans filled at my local motor factor, they have a paint factors too and fill rattle cans with a specific colour in acrylic

My local motor car acces shop has them on the shelf in the silver, i should of said by silver i mean shiney ( chrome style ), a bit dubious on it really and if it works ok,

ah right. For what its worth my old man bout some wide alloys for his hilux and sprayed them with that chrome effect stuff and it lasted well. Put up with off road abuse for a few years. He only did the spokes with it, did the rest red 2k

totaly worth the extra for etch

not sure how the funds are , but you could do silver basecoat then a 2k clear rattle can , theyre about £15-20 on ebay , so not dirt cheap but with nice prep it would be a long lasting finish that stand up to bad weather and cleaning chemicals etc

the last times I have bought rattle cans off ebay I have used a colour code to find the colour then found offers with a 500ml can of paint and a free can of clear too. worth looking for, the paint is quite good quality acrylic and has an adjustable nozzle for fan direction. did the bumper on my mates fez with one, sprayed it panther black on his request, then after putting it on the car realised that his car was gloss...not metallic as he had told me

Hi Steve, the silver i mention is chrome silver, i should of made it clearer sorry, you dont need a clear top coat with it, so it says anyway.

no, doesn't need a clear, clear actually dulls the look (ask me how I know). once its dry and hardened off it polishes up well too

I got a quote for powdercoating from APC in Gorton, Manchester for £35 a wheel. I reckoned this was good value, though probably more than you want to spend. I haven't had it done yet, but they have good reports on other forums.

I've been reliably informed city powder coaters in brum are quoting £20 a wheel.....

But are very hard to get to by phone.

Well done 2 of the wheels, look good but not exactly what i wanted a si was after the chrome look, now the paint i got didnt do what it says on the tin, nice shine though







Now they have been stood for over 24hrs so set fully, now i wiped them down with some tissue as when i wiped my finger over them the silver rubbed onto my finger, even after a second wipe over. i havnt known this before and all i can think of is that its crap paint????

If paint is then crap i guess i will hav eto lacqure them now, i mite be adding a black pin stripe of 10mm on the outer edge so atleast the lacquer will hold that inplace better.

lol yea balloon tyres like on my van flop over at 90 mph on bends and drift across the road on the sidewalls brown trowser and bycycle clips stuff

I am going to try some 17`s on it when i get used to driving it, these cars are lively even on 13`s, go lower pro tyres then you gota be quick when the back end gets giddy.

Anyway all that aside i am not happy with the finish, i got some black pin stripe for the outer edge, i should of known really that it wouldnt work with the silver piant coming off of the finger wipe. So the stripe is a no go, so whilst i got the stripe i got some clear lacquer to try to seal the silver, now the silver has gone to a grey colour FFS. I thnk i will just sand all back and go with gold now, more peed off as it was the last bit of cash i have left and its waisted ((

watch what u put on and laquer over some gold spray goes a bit black when i did my rs wheels i did them with basecoat silver then 2k laquer and they looked well
