Reeded flat bar

I'm looking for some "reeded" steel bar but don't know if any such thing is available.

It looks pretty much like this timber

It used to be used in proper wrought iron garden furniture but i might be 100 years too late.

Any ideas?

I would guess you are looking for proper wrought iron.
Hard stuff to find these days, a mix of iron and slag in layers.
Apparently wonderful to forge work, does not rust very much and almost impossible to weld.
It does crop up for sale occasionally might be worth trying fleabay.

This is one of those multi-layered conversations where everyone thinks they're talking about the same thing.

Wyn is after a specific profile, NOT a specific material. (Right????)

Yes, they still 'make' wrought iron in one or two small scale places, but unless you absolutely need it for restoration purposes of listed buildings etc, you are looking at using steel.

Wyn - if you can't find a supplier of that profile, anyone could bash that out on a powerhammer for you. Depends how badly you need it.

Al. Probably jumping to the wrong conclusion.

Hello Wyn, I'm sure the usual "wrought iron" suppliers Blundles. DC iron etc have that sort of profile. I think it is used for making the clips that bend around the junction where the scrolls meet in gates etc, don't know if they have different sizes.

It is for making garden furniture.

It wasn't specifically wrought iron but that sort of profile in mild steel.
I did have a look at the usual "wrought iron" component suppliers but nothing i could see.

I was hoping for something around 2" wide by around 1/4" thick and 20' lengths.

As you say, Al, the only option might be re-profiling some mild steel flat.

The cost may be too much, i'll have to find out how badly he really wants this furniture.

That pic is ugly but it wasn't quite that sort of style of bench.

I was thinking of heating and running through rollers but i'm not sure it will be worth all the effort.

It does sound a right faff, but the customer is always right, as long as they can afford to pay for it.

Wyn - you have a propane forge, right? Just make a spring fuller with the right pattern and heat a section & run it through (under hammer), rinse & repeat.

Or just buy it in from a 'decorative iron' co.

Im sure you can get it in MS, suppliers like F H Brundle will be able to get it, they do twisted square and stuff like that and im sure i saw it in their catalogue when i was looking at prices.

Did you get ever anywhere with your search ? I would like to find some reeded flat bar too for same purpose in restoring a regency bench.
