simple advice......dont panic!!
we are conditioned from a very young age to work hard, get a job, get into loads of debt then spend the best part of your life paying for stuff you dont want or need
I was made redundant at 51 a year last April, still out of work....Im still here........
I have ups and I have downs, but keep myself busy doing stuff I want to do. Im lucky as my missus still works and she seemingly enjoys her job
......me, the fun went out of mine about 10-years ago when the firm I was working for then, nearly killed me through the ever present "cost saving" regimes. It dawned on me I was just a commodity like the spares sitting on the shelf in the workshops...Left for another job soon after.Fast forward to the redundancy last year, first time in a 35 year, conscientious, loyal, reliable trustworthy working life, then working for a new firm for the last 2.4 years....out the door with no warning, just the government statutory payment, or so they thought........ No representation (non-unioinised recognised firm). Did some of my own research as Im a big boy now, and prepared my own statement and case in readiness for the tick box exercise parting of the waves meeting........cut a long story short I went out of there with a bit more than the 2.4 weeks they were offering me, not a fortune but it made me feel better. Typical mismanaged, outsourced, lack of experience HR and management based company who think everyone is going to roll over and do as they say........probably why I went out the door
Im now coming up to 14-months out of work, its been tough I can tell you, constantly being rejected, ignored, messed about, but I'll keep trying, I never give up. I've had a few offers but, as Im getting long in the tooth I cannot be Rsed with high stress jobs, or over ambitious corporate bull "towing the company line" environments. Was offered a role in a local college lecturing/NVQ assessing but quickly realised it was tick box exercise job, and meant retraining for something again which I was only half interested in..................sitting in a class of snowflake millennials undergoing teacher training would have ended in tears
Id love to be in a position where I was able to be walking from one job into another or be batting offers off left right and center, unfortunately, its not the case for me. The demand for my skillset had been in decline locally for many years, with more firms closing down, outsourcing, and the race to the bottom has been swift. Im not prepared to go work at any job for peanuts, or in some back street sweatshop just to pay for sky TV, the latest mobile phone, or the loan on a 4X4 to sit on the drive. I live within my means, and I'm cheap to run
Many of my mates seem more angry at me when they constantly ask why Ive not got a job yet????............They are always moaning about this that and the other, like we all do when we have a job, but then hop into their 4x4, head home to the detached mega mortgage 5 bed home to sit in front of the 55" Plasma they just paid for on the credit card
So............ back to my advice, don't panic, live within your means and look after your physical and mental health....its much more important than anything........and I mean anything!!!

Make sure that the job is being made redundant & they are not just using it as a way of getting rid of you as a senior worker to employ somebody younger on less money. Remember you will be entitled time off to seek new employment should the redundancy be followed through & they must consult with you as to why they’re making you redundant.

If anyone is looking for work right now it isnt great, I was pushed into employment due to c19 and honestly most recruiters are rubbish.
You need to find one who can actually read a CV and not blindly go through with a tick list, discarding anyone who doesn't meet all the "criteria"
The recruiter who found me a position understood me, my situation and what the employer wanted but also what they were offering.
Also if you have to do a video interview, treat it as a real interview. I was the only one out of 5 people to put a suit on and it was made a point of

A friend of ours wouldn't employ blokes under 40 said they were all undependable. One in his twenties that they set on on a recommendation said he couldn't make it into work because his mum couldn't bring him. He only lived 2 miles away. Take your redundancy and get a part time job let the young uns have it for now.

The chill bit is so important, the stress of wringing out every entitlement can have an adverse affect on health. I have always been self employed but if I ever had to jump ship I think I would embrace it as a challenge.

Its a bit like the newspaper ad I was reading in the dentists waiting room, it was for an engineer and it went on for bit about expectations and previous experience. The last line read " only grey haired men need apply" says it all really.

I was 51 when I got the "your job is finishing, either apply for another internal job or take redundancy". So - I worked out how much money I needed to live on, when do my pensions kick in and what are they worth, savings + how much redundancy payment I would get = do I even need another job? if so then how much extra money do I need and for how long?
That way to can go to your consult with a clear path ahead of you and if they are offering concessions / retraining opportunities which ones may be of interest.
Also, log on to HMRC and check your state pension "status", very useful!

True......I walked out and never went back...I was supposed to go for meetings and they wanted me to do a presentation to a young HR Manager on why I should keep my job....never going to happen

cant understand this you pay some that knows what he doing say 30.000 a year make him go put another person in his place for 20,000 yes save 10,000 a year but add in the pay out then you have to spend 3 months training the new bloke after a year hes off to another job better paid would it not be better to keep the orignal person at the higher rate that causes you less hassel ?
becomes of managers and poeple doing the highering and fireing that dont know **** about the job and just know how to save money on paper
I have been made redundant twice but was much younger than you. first and foremost you must assess your financial position do cashflow statements identify what is essential and what is not required. At 58 you need to review your pension position how much will you get and when, likewise for the state pension.
Go to the meetings as others have said make sure the redundancy is Bona Fide and not a way of singleing you out and downgrading your job if it is you may have a case for an employment tribunal at that stage you need professional advice.
If it is above board then seek early payment of your pension without detriment as part of any package (Assuming you are in a company pension) Ask about recruitment training take any courses they offer especially if they delay the actual leaving date it is money in your pocket. Good Luck.

I retired twice, once at 60 when I sold the business and the second time was 5 1/2 years later when I stopped working for the person I sold the business to. I'd only intended to help out for a couple of weeks! After retiring I've ended up being busier than ever. If you can turn your hand to anything, you can earn lots of money and invariably it's in your hand. I will have a go at anything and that is your passport because other people either can't or won't try stuff. I can weld, brick lay, do electrical, plumbing, (gas, but we don't mention that), woodwork, metalwork, I have a lathe and access to a big 'un, I do lawnmowers, compressors, small engines, bikes, electronics, I'll design stuff, I'll have a crack at anything. mostly self taught or internet sourced sometimes. I'm always in demand and can be busy 7 days a week if I choose. Don't look at it as you are now worthless, look at it as an opportunity to expand your worth. Good Luck.
very true..........I changed my Linkedin profile from Metallurgist to Shed Builder.......I was getting too many job offers but they didnt stop...instead I had people asking me to build them a shed.........Ive now changed again, to Professional Sheffield Wednesday Fan.....surprisingly the offers have stopped.
