Consensus view seems to be put a 45 Deg bevel on the threaded end. Will give it go next time I have to reduce a bolts length & see how I get on. I do have a lathe so might try putting the 45 chamfer on with a cutting tool. Thanks for all the replies

I did an apprenticeship
when its finished and fitted make sure the bolt head sticks out from the nut 1/8 th of an inch to be correct
and don't forget to put washers onProbably one of the most simple jobs you will ever have to do and people like to make it as complicated as they can !!!
What one person classes as simple, others may find a chore. I'm in the camp of hacksaw, face with file and remove any burrs with a triangular or small file. Never bother running a nut on first myself, and never had any problems. It's only a simple task if someone can do it though. What one person classes as simple, others may find a chore.
