Redline 170

Hey. I'm thinking of buying a Redline 170 (available locally with 2yr guarantee). This is for DIY welding on a car restoration project. Some advice/informed opinion on this make would be much appreciated - I can't seem to find anything other than the marketing blurb.

If I am correct the lowest setting is 40 amps, which is a little bit high for car work as a rule, is there any spares back up?

Parts I'm not sure about!! Another option I considered is the Clarke 160TM. Any thoughts on this model? I'm new to welding and I'm looking for the most versatile machine for c.£300.

Just do a quick search in the forum box for 'Clarke160TM'; there are lots of threads on here about it, they make for interesting reading, and it is generally a well-regarded machine.
But be aware that despite its name it is only 150 Amp output at the top end, the same as several cheaper models in the Clarke range.

Thanks. I'll do that. I'd still like some feedback from anyone with experience of Redline. Depending where you pick up the info half of the sites suggest a current rating of 30amps at the bottom end on the 170 model?!?
