I'm lime pointing a 1910 house and trying to match the mortar colour. The colour isn't white like modern trendy lime mortar, but instead is a rich golden colour. The builders would have used sand from the nearest pit which will have since closed.
I found a really good match which was sold by Buildbase as Leighton Buzzard plastering sharp sand (photo below). It's mucky and a rubbish sand for plastering but a perfect match for my mortar, but Buildbase have run out and they say the quarry has closed. It needs to have a max grain size of about 2 or 3mm (the usual concreting sharp sand is about 5mm) and be well graded (lots of different size grains). The colour is red very much like red building soft sand.
Has anyone seen sand like this kicking about anywhere or know where to find it? I need a tonne and I'm prepared to travel. Also anyone want a tonne and a half of proper plastering sand that doesn't match?
