Red Oxide paint

I have finally run out of a 5 Litre tin of yellow Zinc Chromate primer that I have had for some years.

Nanny state dictats do not allow us to have that any more, like many other products that actually work, so I am down to Red Oxide (or grey) instead.

Of course it is not really lead oxide any more either, actually zinc phosphate, which apparently is nearest best.

There are many brands and wildly varying prices. Brundles (the steel people) offer 2.5 litres for £9.20 plus VAT but this is meant to be sprayed and seems too good to be true ....... or is it ?

Any recommendations ? Maybe I should grey, or even black ?

I had good luck with Screwfix's own brand a few years ago.....no idea now.....
I used a lot of primer n paint for steel when I lived in the UK....in the end I found a manufacturer that would advise and supply locally.....I would buy 25lt at a time....

I have mine delivered from Elmbridge £5.50 c
+ vat delivered,about 32+ vat per 5 litre,bee n using this for 20+ years.

Going back several years, The Screwfix "Red Oxide" was a zinc phosphate piant, but I'm fairly sure it isn't now; I don't think it contains any inhibitor.
I've had good results from zinc phosphate and I too have used it for a long time. I'm currently using some stuff from Palatine paints, which has a higher ZP content than most other brands.

I use, it's as good as everywhere else, it will need the specified thinner as white spirit doesn't mix with it, the thinner is also a good panel wipe solution.
I use the grey zinc primer

Screwfix,toolstation,and most of the others have all switched over to the waterbased stuff,and yes its garbage

No nonsense metal primer ! That was jus about the best, but they discontinued it a couple of years ago.

The ZP paint originally sold by Screwfix as "Red Oxide" had a SDS which showed it was made by Johnstone's. It was, and still is, really good stuff but Screwfix sold it in handy 1litre cans whereas Johnstone's only offer it in 5L cans, which is more than I need. I prefer to use paint that is no more than 3 years old.

Paragon sell a made-in-Britain zinc phosphate primer. Alternatively, Bondarust for a zinc-rich resin paint that has been highly regarded for many years?
