recumbant quad

got morning off as no exams till this afternoon.
so thought i would make start on my 6 yr old sister's next bike.
it's a recumbant quad, going to be putting adjustable position seat on.
already fitted adjustable front boom by welding seat tube to frame then welding a crank to seat post, giving me 6" of adjustment.
it is upside down in pic as was on bench having steering tabs welded on.

Is it going to have a freewheeling hub and what are you doing for brakes?

Brakes are for sissies, the Ackerman looks a bit extreme She'll build some leg muscles propelling that round, good work and hope it keeps her occupied for a long time and we get some nice weather for her to use it.

got to turn adaptor for fitting hub onto axle.
disc brake going on back axle and 2 normal pull brakes at front.
steering will be 2 tubes bent and fitted into headstocks connected underneath by bar with rose joint at each end.

other builds are doing fine tays chopper trike is now owned by his best mate, as he talked me into shortening my recumbant for him.
but i am working on trike for me with rear wheel steering and front wheel drive.

yes similar but 2 wheels at back that will be steered and just one at front that is driven.
so front will be similar to below but rigid not steerable

rear steering on a trike will be not be nice to ride bit like a fork truck very quick at speed i would have thought a no no

If there's enough caster angle I would have thought it would be okay?

AFAIK the FWD versions use 1/2" drive socket universal joints to transmit the power yet allow steering

A little more involved than just 1/2 Sq/dr UJ's.
Bespoke 6 spline Ti UJ's................. up until 7 years ago I owned the white AS trike that there are plenty of photos on the net.

Designed by ex-Ilyushin engineers in Russia and made from material acquired from the aircraft factory. Supplied originally in kit form as 2 wheel drive/front wheel drive, and I think I was the first person to make one 3wd. After riding about on it for a while mine then got up graded with bespoke custom front wheels with discs brakes and 12 Volt hub dynamos.

managed to get bit done with moo yesterday, she finally felt like doing something on bike.
fitted steering tube into frame and made steering rods.
having to have normal handlebars as she tried tays bike and kept crashing into things.
bars on it at mo are just for setting up steering and making sure everything is in line.

Couple of techy questions - those front wheels - just ordinary cycle wheels supported at one end of the spindle? - Guess that works fine with your lightweight pilots. But what about the back end? Are they trike wheels? And is that back axle split in two with only one driven wheel? Thanks

ordinary 20" wheels tab that is welded to end of head tube is 1/2" thick x 1" wide drilled and tapped to accept stud then wheel is screwed into tab and use normal wheel nut to lock it on.
have used same method on my bike, but you can use bmx 14mm stud wheels for heavy people.

rear wheels are ends of some normal hubs welded on to some 32mm rd drilled out 16mm, then spoked up and trued.
axles are 20mm solid with ends turned down to fit into wheels which are held on with grub screws.
axles run through pillow block bearings.
yes split in 2.
