Recovery software

I have achieved part of what I set out to do but I now know I am at my last throw of the dice looking for whats left on a disk. windows says the partition is empty. Puppy linux says files are there but I cant copy them so my last resort is recovery low level software..

Any suggestions.?

havnt you created a boot cd yet and tried the master boot record fix

Handy recovery worked for me once.. it's not free for the full version though.
Alter active is to restore your backups. If you don't have backups the a time machine. Doesn't matter how long you take to invent that though.

Yes amte but dont forget I am working on two separate laptops. I have saved my files thanks to a command from Scotl and put that drive back in my laptop and restored it to factory.

Now I have put the drive from the other laptop into a cady and looked at it again.

It shows a couple of partitions but no data on the second one.

I can see files using puppy linux but was unable to copy them. so I am looking at recovery software to see what that throws up.....I might go back and try linux again but I am trying all options just now. As much out of interest than anything..

What stopped Linux copying the files?
If you can read the disk then you should be able copy them off.
In Linux you can use rsync to copy them. If you share your other laptop or a disk on it and install samba you can rsync over the network..
Really need to know what happened to the disk

First of all the laptop would not boot., I tried to rebuild the MBR.

That failed and then I put the disc into a caddy and looked at it on a windows box. I saw files but they would not copy. Then they were not viewable. .

I then put it back in the laptop and ran puppy linux and again could see the files but not copy them.

SO I left it and concentrated on getting my own la[ptop back to factory. I then looked at the other laptops drive in a caddy on a fresh install of winows. It see the drive and partitions but no files.

I have recovered data from disks with spinrite and ddrescue. look them up online.

ukracer you have to remember not everything can be brought back from your hard drive as you can pay as much as you like and it will still be the same

in hindsight we should really back up the hard drive but not many of us do but thats no guarantee either

Yeah its starting to look that way. It's intermittent as I can see the partition at times and not others. I will have another look tonight...

freeze the hard drive in a plastic bag then try backing it up

take a look on net on how to do it yours is a hardware problem if intermttent

I switched my desktop on this morning and it's not having it at all The disc has developed the tick of death and I'm using a laptop I found in a hedge bottom running Xubuntu. Not bothered about the drive contents really but I will probably have a look at it when I get a fresh one installed, it's just such a pain having to do it

id come across that one myself pedro then come across acronos and made an image so nowadays it takes 6 mins to install the lot including the programs that i use all the time then its just finish off with the new programs that i have installed on top
and because im happy with the new installs i then make a backup image of that copy for future use saves loads of time that way better than taking 24hrs to install all i use on my system again

Installed windows 8 and nearly back onto windows 10 just about ready to sign in on the desktop. Reading the message it puts on screen as I type. It's telling me how much better my life will be now I have upgraded. Time to start looking for drivers: (

I had a scare when I had 90k photos, now I have Raid1 in my desktop that automatically backs up to my Raid1 nas box (that's in an actual brick out house) and also a jpeg backup to my unlimited Flickr account

Backups are boring until you don't have one

115k photos now and I feel a bit safer, I do have a lot of negatives as well, but scanning them again would be a pain

I went through his process a few years back, you will need to hook up the drive in a caddy and also have storage space at least the size of the drive if not much more. I used several different pieces of software and each one picked up different levels of deleted files. Be prepared to sift through thousands of irrelevant files and thumbnails that are created in the normal process of the PC running. I can have a look and see if I've still any of the software if you like.

Get a vps for remote backups too. Covers you for fire, flood and theft.

Storage vps are really cheap.

You could install owncloud, or just rsync if on *nix.
