Record vice’s

Hi all. I have recently inherited 3 record vices and they have been garden art for at least 10 years. Obviously they are completely seized solid with rust. How would you go about unseizing them? As they are cast I’m sure heat is out the window and it would cost a fortune to immerse the in rust eaters as 2 of them are massive. I have no clue how to strip them down so any ideas or thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

acf 50 ,,and if i couldnt get that injectorx from wurth is mighty ,,, if your on a budget ,mix some atf and some acetone ,,, apply liberally every few days ,,, then see how you get on.

As much as I'm not a fan of citric baths, citric acid powder is cheap enough. You could easily dunk them without it costing an arm & a leg.

auto gearbox fluid and acetone 50/50 mix...ive gotten away just using auto box fluid in the past for stuff that isnt quite as crusty

if rusted solid this is the best way

dip for a few days remove wind closed a bit hit with rubber mallet to move the jaws dip for a few days and repeat
after you got it moving a bit wind out and rubber malet it open a bit and repeat once the rust has freed only then try to just open it by turning the screw

I've had good results by sticking rusted solids things in a bucket of diesel for a week or two.

Derv and Dexron ATF 50/50 mix

Probably there's better, but it's nice and cheap, and I've had good results with it.

Unless we see how bad it actually is, how can good solutions be proposed?
They are possibly boat anchors just missing a chain, or just a good wire brush followed by a choice of derust solutions or penetrating oils?

Whatever they're like, I'd be trying to fix them, and my first step would be chucking them in a derv/Dexron mix

You do not need to fill a swimming pool with evaporust and then throw the vice in at the shallow end.

Find a very heavy duty plastic bag and use that. Tie string around the bag to keep it close to the item and minimise the excess volume.

If you have to use a container with wasted space, take up the excess space with bricks or plastic bottles or plastic bags filled with water.

The citric acid will work better if you can devise a way to keep it warm (e.g. 30-40 degrees).

If it's just rusty I use FX2 powerflushing cleaner, works a treat.
