Record 35 vice - seems lighter duty than expected?

I have one of the smaller record vices - i dont know the name, but the one with the square back to it.

I was offered a Record 35 today, but, when i picked it up, it seemed much lighter than i expected. It *seemed* about the same sort of weight as my smaller vice, although it is physically much larger.

I did not accept the unit, but i wonder if i made the right choice?

I took some photos, but ive only just got home, and they are still uploading.

Is it a steel vice perhaps?

That would seem to account for the weight - i thought it looked thinner than expected too.

Are steel vices desirable? I guess they wont crack like cast.

The first thing I noticed when I bought a steel vice was how much lighter it was. They'll definitely take a beating without fracturing.

Dont get all crazed at me, but there wasnt one. I turned it down as i wasnt sure if it was good for me, and, if it wasnt, i would rather it sold for whatever the going rate is.

Im aware that people try and sell them on ebay for big money, but completed listings suggests more like £40-60.


The price wasnt really relevant to my situation though - i dont need another vice unless it does something special that my existing record does not. Im not a vice collector. For me, given my limited space, having more tools is actually a hinderance, unless they actually do the job better than what i have currently.



So, my question was more about the vice itself, than what would be a good price for one, as there wasnt a price for me - but i dont just want to accumulate stuff just because its free.

I think thats my problem. I dont really "need" a new vice but would love a 6 inch quick release one.

But round here you would think they are made of caviar...let alone steel.

Steel, hence the low weight. Steel castings are a lot thinner than cast iron castings. They're good for taking a beating, but can still be damaged. Personally, I prefer cast iron over steel. No specific reason other than I like some meat on a vice, and have no intentions of beating on one. That's where leg vices come into their own, for heavy work.

I have two Record 36ps. They are surprisingly hollow. I think I paid around 30 quid or less for the nicer one. If you bide your time you can usually find one cheap.

I've got a 36 and I struggle to lift it off the floor.

I believe CW said they were made from malleable iron at one time, so yours may be made from that.
