See my earlier thread. Weld to heat them, impact driver until they came out. I re-welded the torn up heads and cut a new slot. The ones I had in the 634 were unobtainable. Believe me, I tried.

Thanks Screwdriver, unfortunately I do not weld, I'm just here for the machinery restoration They were already seriously munted when I got them, I think someone else had had a go before me. Classic online auction blurry as hell photos, but I was willing to take a risk as it was only 20 quid

Thinking I'll take it into uni when it opens in 4 weeks and see if they can help me as I don't have a drill press or a means to tap a new thread. Bloody annoying though. Also, does anyone know where I can get new screws for a Record vice? They're a special type, with a sort of conical head that fits with the hole on the jaws.

Start with making a fully dimensioned drawing of the screws (overall length, thread diameter, number of threads to the inch - either measure ten threads and report the length or see how many threads span 1/2 inch of your rule, head diameter, slot width and depth, taper angle and length). Someone will then turn them up for you on a lathe. I would use a grade 8.8 bolt as it is cheap and good steel. You will need the thread specification when you remove the broken screw - the drill size will be important and the correct tap must be used.

I'm going to go to the engineers tomorrow and see what they make of the screws, hopefully the thread is salvageable on three. Thanks for all the suggestions, infinitely helpful as I have very little knowledge on this sort of thing.

Well, bit of a weird experience today. Went down to the local eng suppliers and took my bolts/screws from my vice down, I needed a few 1/2 washers for a woodworking vice anyway so I thought I'd get all the jobs done in one. Well, the engineer there got very annoyed with my for merely asking if he could make me a new screw, or if he had a die to cut the thread back! 'We don't use BSF, it hasn't been used for years, you can't come into here with that old stuff and expect us to be able to help you - everything is metric these days' was what I was hit with. The washers were still sold in imperial sizes but perhaps I was missing something. Anyway he gave me them for free which was nice, but I'm not sure how I feel!

I've put the three back into the vice and they're holding so they'll do for now. I've put it all back together as I bought a very nice little flat punch made by Moore & Wright on the way home, second hand. I don't know if it's just me but I do like using old tools to restore other old tools - something about it just feels right!

Looks like I used a blowtorch rather than welding but heat is always your friend with stuck fasteners.

Hunt someone down with a TIG welder, they'll be able to build up a nice blob on the broken screw then weld a nut to it, the heat will loosen the corrosion holding the bolt in and it will come out easily. For one of my Record 36's I turned some new screws out of 8.8 bolts and they worked fine, the other one I bought new jaws for and it came with the correct screws.

Well cosmetically finished (except the tommy bar needs polishing) and even showing a few battle scars, I thought I'd upload a picture to bring some sort of closure to the story of restoration. The thing got a right dousing in kerosene the other day cleaning the Samson angle bender but I cleaned it up for this photo. I probably wouldn't use Hammerite paint again, it feels gummy in application and there are better coatings on the market for cheaper prices. Still, you live and learn, and it looks a hell of a lot better than how it was when I bought it. See what you think.

It's a shame that the rest of the 3x family was discontinued by Record Irwin, as I would have done the same and bought new jaws. I might email them as Winchman says and see what happens. I assume the screws are shared between the 3x family, can't really see a benefit of making different ones...

Almost a year later I have managed to hunt down a pair of new-old-stock jaws for these - $40, think that's pretty good. I will update as and when they come. I've got some extractors and since my last post I also have a drill press so I am sure I can get that last screw out.

Looking at your old jaws DK you could probably sell them on eBay (or whatever you local variant is) and get some of the cost back. They look in pretty good shape.

Yeah they're not bad, just spattered with weld slag which I've ground down. It's a great vice (one of record's best patterns in my opinion, the 3X series) and I want to get it working like new. I'm pleased to be getting the screws too

The jaws arrived - yippee! I eagerly took them inside the workshop to find that upon fitting, the screws are BSW not the original BSF type... I couldn't even replace the old screws with the new jaw as the taper on the new ones is much more shallow than the old ones.

Now it's probably the saving grace that BSF is so fine because I chose to re-tap the holes to fit the 3/8W screws the jaws came with. They fit well and are secured fast. I've only done the front jaw as the back one is a bit trickier what with having a screw snapped off in it.

Don't get me started on how hard tapping a hole in an unsecured piece of oddly shaped iron is. This is pure justification for having more than one of the same type of vice!
