Recommendations for cordless drill chuck

I bought a Hitachi 18v cordless drill approx 5 years ago (i.e. before they became Hikoki) and have been very pleased with it. There's only one problem with it and that is the chuck loosening off in use. No matter how hard I swing on it, it will work loose when drilling or driving screws. I'm assuming that it's the chuck that's at fault, so what are my replacement options? I want decent quality (and a chuck that stays tight in use), but don't want to pay half the price of the original drill. All recommendations gratefully received.

Which drill did you buy? The ones with the metal chucks use a Rohm chuck that is one of the better chucks available - but still they seem to suffer from dropping a bit, as the brake is a bit eager.

What is the model number?

Find the exploded diagram for it and check the price of an OEM replacement chuck as baseline.

You will need to know how to remove the old one and confirm what thread is on it to ensure any replacement is compatible.

Scour eBay for an electrically-faulty but mechanically-sound donor.

It's a DV 18DGL model. This spare parts list gives the holding screw as a LH thread M6 x 23 mm. Looking inside it appears to be a slotted head.

The holding screws are always LH thread and have no influence on the chuck. The thread you need to identify is the male thread on part number 7 of the diagram.

That exploded diagram gives you the chuck part number. It is £20 + £3.99 postage from here.

As far as I can recall, the drill has always suffered this problem of the chuck loosening in use, so I'm not entirely sure that I want to replace like with like. I'd be more inclined to go with a specialist aftermarket part, such as Rohm if they are not too pricey. Does anyone have any suggestions for a non-Hitachi/Hikoki replacement?

Many of the new Hikoki drills have Rohm metal chucks for example:

Might give you a few options for part numbers - they are nice chucks, with minimal runout and a spinning nose collar which makes starting holes a lot more precise, especially with small drills.
However, I've several of these now and they all still drop bits because the brake is so arbupt it loosens them off. The only way around it is to get into the habbit of slowly releasing the trigger.
The metal chucks are much nicer than the plastic ones though.

Yoy can't generally go wrong with the metal body Rohm's. They're a good keyless chuck.

Before you spend any money check if it has a built in lock some chucks do. Do the chuck up then undo it a fraction and see if it clicks. The click is the lock engaging. Don't undo it past the click
