I got a Milwaukee cordless drill, it was a choice between that or DeWalt, went for the Milwaukee as it has a 3 year warranty, it’s very good, would definitely buy another of their products. Battery seems to last ages.

Got a link? I've been toying with the idea of getting an impact wrench recently. I did buy one from the web a while back but returned it because it wouldn't undo wheel nuts which I'd fitted myself on a previous wheel change, so I knew weren't overtightened.

Even the cheapies are ok for stripping engines and machinery. Biggest challenge for the lesser rattle guns seems to be wheel nuts, nothing wrong with a breaker bar to get them cracked off or tightened and just use the rattle gun as a nut runner. It has to be better than nothing.

I had a 'Marksman' 18v Nicad 1/2" impact driver & once cracked it was great for running off bolts, wheel nuts, etc. Great too for engine work where its lack of grunt was great for doing things like sumps with loads of small bolts.

I've yet to buy the dewalt but I came across this absolute unit on machine mart, similar to what ross recommended but this has more torque

reviews are decent although I'm a bit suspicious of MM reviews..

Right lads..... In an uncharacteristic moment of reflection today, while waiting the hour it takes for my 'pre-meds' to be absorbed prior to my treatment, I tried to prioritise 'wants' v 'needs' and reached the conclusion that an impact wrench needn't be top of the list.

I remembered I'm going to have to replace at least two tyres when the time comes to swap back on to the summer alloys on the E60 then insurance will be due soon after.

I've helped with/owned and worked on cars for 60 years and have managed without one so far, so sense prevails and I'll put the acquisition on the back burner for the moment.
That said, I may treat myself to a knurling tool as ' compensation'...sad, isn't it?

As always, I appreciate all the reports and recommendations

I have the Dewalt and it has been good for small stuff i use my old 10.8v dewalt impact driver with a hex to 1/4 or 3/8 socket adaptor

When I made this thread I needed a proper decent impact wrench more than I needed my next breath

But after giving it a few days I've decided I don't really need one, not yet anyway. Maybe when I start work on the gti I'll find myself wanting one but I'll be reyt for now.

Still appreciate all these replies though, it's good to see what to get eventually

Well, I happened to be in Lidl today (cough* cough*) and browsing the 'Middle of Lidl' [as you do ] and picked up one of the impact wrenches for £59.99 - can't be bad with 4.0Ah battery/sockets/charger and case, plus a 3 year warranty like all their stuff. They had 11 on the shelves....10 now.

Not opened it yet [how good am I? ] but it'll be interesting to see how it fares with the limited use I'm likely to subject it to.

As an aside, I also filled the car up with fuel - petrol in Asda was £1.48.7, diesel another 4p on top. Pumps were all clear when I arrived, no queues.

Our Lidl have a load of the new brushless tools in now, inc an impact driver!

Milwaukee 1/2 Fuel impact, Dewalt are cheaper, both will easily do what you need.

I've got a Ryobi which struggles with really tight stuff. A milwaukee is on my 'wish list'.

I got collared by some dewalt reps in Guildford going into Screwfix. I said sorry I'll stop you there I use red tools. "ohhhhh...., no point talking to you then. Out of interest why?" Well I tried their big impact in a garage and it impressed me so that started it off.

Chatted back and forth a bit and it came up the impact was in the boot of the Defender so they asked to have a look. Turned around and said "yup no way we can compete with that".

The Parkside won't touch the Milwaukee, but for £60?

A brilliant tool for £60 - and you can use the batteries on the other Parkside stuff. I have the drill (only 10mm so don't expect too much), grinder - OK but it's a cheap battery grinder, but really convenient, a recip saw which has been OK, and I want the circular saw!

It's cheap and cheerful gear, but that lot with 3 batteries cost in the region of £180.

Plus if I loose one or it leaves me then there is no big drama. The drill and grinder can stop if you put too much pressure on. I had a bit of a downer on with grinder as I had to use two batteries to cut some 3mm galv plate - but I cut 800mm which equates to about 50mm square bar so I may of been a bit harsh- plus it is very convenient.

I wish I had access to the brushless Parkside stuff!!

Works had ryobi, three tools and one of them three was always in the sin bin
To be fair the guys are animals and expect the cordless to do the work of the air tools

For DIY use they are OK, wouldn't want to use them to earn a living on a daily basis.
