recomend me a vacuum oil extractor

I need to change the powersteering fluid on my Shogun and would like a vacuum oil extractor of some sort.

Some thing like this perhaps?

I have the bluepoint version for oil changes. It can be reversed for emptying or even filling stuff.

Not sure about that sealey one

I have the Sealey badged version of this. Its about 10 years old. I dont use it much, just on small engines. Bigger stuff I do through the drain bung anyhow.

I doubt I will use i for engine oil changes but, one would be handy for powersteering fluid changes and to fill up the diffs, and boxes on the mitsis

Power steering oil change. I normally remove the return hose to the reservoir, put it in the waste container start the engine and pump it out topping up the reservoir if you need to flush it.

I have a similar vacuum jobbie for emptying fluids, usually petrol or diesel from my pressure washer and generator

Same style as the Sealey one and it doesn't pump fluid only suck

For filling diffs and gearboxes I use an old killer spray bottle, similar to this

I have a Pella or whatever they're called. The round one with the manual pump.

If I ever buy another I'll get an air powered one.

Manual ones are fine whilst you are just easily sucking liquid, but, when you get close to the bottom, the moment they suck any air at all, toy have to re prime them.

So you may try the hose in a few positions... Every time you have to reprime it.

An air one would, I think, be easier.

Pela pumps are cheapest when bought from on-line Chandlers, I found.

No point in the ones that can be used to extract and refill. They are almost impossible to clean so,as soon as you have filled them with old dirty oil any remaining in the pump will contaminate your nice clean oil.

On the Shogun its easy, remove a power steering pipe from the rack and place a bowl underneath it, assuming you have jacked it up on the lower wishbone arms you turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock and it forces it out without the engine running, refill with Dexron III if it is a MK3 or 4 and let it settle and top up, start the engine and watch the level drop and fill as it drops, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a few times and the new oil flushes the old oil from the PAS pump and bleeds it out, check level and add more if neceessary.

For a total change you repeat and this removes the flushed old oil from the pump; but Mitsubishi in their wisdom reccomend the dilution method which is to drain the reservoir using a syringe every two years and refill the reservoir with new Dexron III.

Mine is the older shogun it has a steering box rather than rack. But the same principal will work

I have one of these and they are excellent. Taiwan made. Mine is extraction only- manual or with shop air. They do a version for filling and extraction. Not sure how easy they are to get hold of over here now.

I have issues with them and that is they don't get all the oil out and the lowest point of the oil is where all the solids are.

In some tests they have pumped sumps out and the remains of the oil left in quickly degrades the replacement oil you are filling with, so be aware of this.

I ran a test when I first got mine. Used it, then removed the sump plug and about an eggcup full of oil was all that came out afterwards - given the dilution rate that's good enough for me.

Dealers all use the vacuum method now anyway.
