I have access to a new Stihl, good for light work I use it for. But my Husqvarna was built before to much H&S came along. It has taken lots of abuse, but down side it is a bit heavier than the Stihl.
Look what jobs you are doing and take it from there.

Yep I've got two saws ...10 inch and 18 inch I never use the 18 'cos it seems such a heavy and numb bit of kit .. I can use the 10 inch all day ..pruning logging etc ... it's my go to saw .. infact I don't think I've used the big saw since I bought the little'un.... jeff....

I just bought a husqvarna 435 (15" .325) but will take a 16" bar. Lovely saw very easy to use, super light and the vibration dampening is excellent. (£245)
The 135 is the same saw with a hair less power and a few less features such as fuel sight glass etc and a smaller bar (14" 3/8) but it's obviously a bit cheaper. (£200)
I would have probably bought the Stihl ms181 for the tool less chain tensioning but stihl won't sell bladed tools over the internet and local dealers were over £100 more than online.
So I'm a husqvarna convert from here on out.
www.worldofpower.com were the cheapest online and great to deal with.

Flip flops, shorts, and a t shirt.
Husky or Stihl, although I'm a husky fan. For general use, make sure its not a top handle saw (for arborists). Proper PPE is not so expensive, just heavier than the nice stuff.
On the subject of flip flops, I have a mate who was sawing a windblown tree in flip flops. He slipped, took several toes off and now has to velcro his left flip flop on.

Plus trousers.
Map of chainsaw injuries shows most on lower legs followed by left hand shoulder where its kicked back and tried to cut your throat!
Be careful out there!

I have had a Husky 346 XP for a few years, brilliant wee saw. Choice partly dictated by my local chainsaw supplier being a Husky dealer. I would look at what your local supplier stocks and see what the best deal is with Stihl or Husky.

I've a Powercraft and JCB one (don't worry, I didn't pay for them) and they may or may not run and operate but that won't happen due to the appalling design of the starting system. Who thinks it's OK to have just a sprag clutch with plastic teeth rather than the usual recoil starter that isn't wearing out every second the machine runs?
Talk about built in obsolescence.
I'm a Husky fan but Stihl are equally as good. Makita aren't terrible (like the Powercraft kind) but I wouldn't recommend one, pretty naff compared to the two good ones.

I'm a member on the Arbtalk forum and a large proportion of the members (professional chainsaw users) don't use chainsaw gloves.
That's not to say I advise not wearing them (I do) it doesn't seem to be high on the list of PPE compared to chainsaw trousers/chaps.
