Recomend a helmet please !

Yesterday I did some of my most awful welds! Welds were fine just not where I wanted them!!! I've come to the conclusion I need to try a new auto helmet as I just cannot see where I'm going with mine, I can see the weld pool but nothing either side. My current one is a no name vanilla helmet that I've had a few years, set to shade 9 I try cleaning lenses, using welders chalk down the sides of the weld - also tried a 500 watt spot light (just darkens the helmet!). Doesn't help that I wear glasses so get glare easily.

So I think I'd like to try a reputable, known make, auto helmet - preferably with a grinding setting - any suggestions which one to try?

Just bought a miller elite and love it. It has got the grinding setting on it. Not a cheap lid but you only get one pair of eyes.

Also got a speedglas 9200x which I also can't fault, apart from cheap headgear compared to the Miller.

I could do with upgrading my Clarke too. I want something with sensitivity adjustment as well as the grinding mode. nothing worse than getting your work piece well lit just for it to set your helmet off! it looks like you can get helmets with all those features quite cheaply nowadays.

The one I have from eBay is very good. Cheap at £45ish but a very good spec. I also have a cheater (magnifying) lens taped over the back screen.

i was looking at one of them too It had a choice of two filters - one having a wider lens, and costing a little bit more money.

Good value can be had with the SWP Eliminator helmet

I had an SWP, and it lasted me a year before it died. I guess that's not bad value at £25

Cheap is good but good is not always cheap !!!

Some have a grinding seting Dave, still not perfect vision though.

I have use of a Parweld with grind function at work ,ok but light needs to be reasonable as its got a tint ,my fav lid is a kemppi alfa,flip up green lens,underneath is a clear lens with a cheater fitted,great for grinding .
I've been known to mark out and centre punch using it when I broke my glasses
I lost/had stolen another kemppi,otherwise I would have one at home too ,i've been using a parweld without grind function at home for a while ,but I would definitely spend the extra for the grind setting if replacing it...

Good value can be had with the SWP Eliminator helmet

Never for grinding but the setting is handy for using the Plasma.

I very rarely see people talk about much more than the price when it comes to recomending a helmet.

As said, you only ever get one pair of eyes, and the de generation is so slow, you cant go back and compaire them to when your eyes were new.

I am not saying its all down to welding, but why take a chance for a few pounds.

I would advise looking at helmets with more than two sensors

I would say that if it's manufactured to the relevant CE/BS specification, then you're only compromising on comfort and utility. My Clarke is OK, however, that did break once, and I had to get it replaced under the 12 month warrantly, as it wouldn't completely darken

I dont claim to know about the way helmets are tested.

But to say just because it has passed a test it must be ok is not how I see it.

All cars on the road go through many crash tests, they all need to pass a standard.

some manufactures excell in these tests, and if I was every un lucky enough to be in a very bad crash, I would sure hope it was in one of the better than standard cars.

My understanding is that auto darkening helmets actually protect you against the uv even when in the light state, but obviously you will take some time to recover from the bright light. The uv filtering I understood is acually inherant in the plastic they are made of. I may be totally wrong but that's what I've been led to believe. It's the uv that gives you arc eye I think.
