Recoating Cellulose paint?

Hi Chaps,

I've painted my car in solid Cellulose paint, but not happy with the door (for starters)

Can I put on another coat of paint as it is, or will I have to flat it back to key it? In other words whats the 'window' on Cellulose paint.

The drivers door was only painted Thursday eve (2nd July)

Hello Dave,

why are you not happy, what is the problem? I would say that you should flat it back prior to putting another coat on, it's not as a key but merely making sure the surface is as good as possible.

Hi Alec,

I'm not happy with the finish as its glossy on most of the panels, but each panel has a duller bit, on the door I've tried to flat it with 2000 and hand polish with G3 but on this 'duller' bit the primer started to show through. I didn't rub too hard.

I put 3 good coats on each panel. The glossy area seems to polish up ok.

Just to add, each coat was an even coat. Gloss finish all over, well pleased. But on drying a duller area appears. Like the bonnet say, 3/4 is gloss and 1/4 is duller. The glossy area feels smooth, the duller area feels rougher.

should be okay to recoat it ...but might be an idea to tickle it with 1500 to make things easier

Maybe filler or lots of paint or spot primed areas underneath sucking up solvents more.

3 coats of cellulose is a bit thin which could also be contributing to the problem. 5 or 6 would have been what I do.

G3 is meant to be used by machine, you might get somewhere by hand but on a large panel like a bonnet it will be hard work and probably not the same result.

Cellulose will bite in to the recent cellulose underneath but a flat back would be advised for a proper job.

Not enough coats of paint with celly to polish yet, grey scotch then start pouring it on

what langy said. celly will sink into most primers. A good key and load it on.

I don't know where I got the 3 coats of cellulose from, it was in my head from somewhere!, but I see what you're saying, key it and more coats.
