recoating 2k ?

Once the temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius it considerably slows down the curing. I think it was pretty warm when you painted it though?

It was Richie, but the following days were a fair bit colder. I was in the body supply shop earlier and asked was i mixing the paint/hardener correctly, eg. 2/1 and they said that was perfect. I'll leave it a while longer and see how it is.

stale harder will cause it to take forever to go off

i find activator starts to crystalize when it starts to go off

How many coats of epoxy and how many coats of 2k? Also what make 2k as some are harder than others.

Richie, three coats of epoxy, but i flattened it down at the end, and two coats of paint. The paint is sherwin williams. Debating weither to sand this paint off or give it a chance to harden properly. Tired of this tbh, i'd assumed this paint would be hard and tough, its depressing after putting so much work into this.

Sherwin williams is a pretty good paint usually , what hardener did you use and what ratio ?

It was the same brand afaik, 2:1, 2 paint to 1 part hardener.

Well the coats scheme looks totally fine, what I would have done.

Can you give it a blast under a halogen floodlight for an hour? Fairly close so it gets hot to the touch but is briefly touchable.

I went over it with a hotgun for the best part of an hour, i don't know if it made any odds though.

all you can do is wait and see how it is in say 7-10 days if its still soft then chances are its going to stay that way

I don't think a heat gun is a great idea, too much heat can sometimes soften paint IR heaters are best other then a heated boot

Went over the entire frame with the heat gun, if it damaged the paint i didn't care as i have nothing to lose. Anyway it seems to have helped, tried the thumb nail test and it is definately harder.

I was talking to a cousin of mine who works as a mechanic in a main dealers, he says the new cars coming in often have soft paint, if you leave something on a bonnet or boot lid it will often leave a mark.

Looking at the frame and bits tonight, i think i might have put too much paint on in some places. Anywhere the paint is a bit thin, its hard, where some of the places its thick its soft. Would this make sense ? I have more bits to spray later in the week if its warm enough, i'll put on less paint and let it dry longer between coats and see if that makes any difference.

If the paint is soft because i applied it too thickly, will it dry out in time ?

How many coats did you put on , I usually limit to 3 in one session because the paint surface drys but the coats underneath are all trying to dry at different rates

You should never pile it on (some do), but at the other extreme coats can be too thin and result in poor gloss and no flow out.

There is still a chance for the bad areas to harden up, especially if the temperature is warm. I have tested paint before by putting say 1cm in the bottom of a PPS cup. After a few days it is still a bit squidgy, but over time it does harden to form a solid "puck".
