Like the hot tub I got asked to install the other week. Luckily the supply cable to the garage was designed with some spare capacity so saved running a cable back to the house.
Warm cables will be ok, the worst that will happen is the cable insulation will deteriorate quicker than a cool cable, and that still may take 20 years depending on the length of time the cable is overloaded for!

I rolled out some SWA I got from site from the house to the bottom of the garden, fitted a metal consumer unit in my workshop I got from site, ran T&E I got from site out in a ring main to sockets I got from site and did the whole workshop myself. Wired into a dual consumer unit in the house so it's on it's own RCD breaker. I ran the T&E ring bare around the roof line just cable tied to the z beam and put the drops in square plastic capped trunking to the metal sockets. Did all of it myself, took care to make sure it was all properly wired including all earths sleeved inside the sockets and it's never given any trouble.

I know the protection works because of the number of times I've tripped the RCD

Hmm, so in the previous house I did the shed/workshop electrics too, and in a country far away in another house I have also changed consumer units, fitted electric showers etc, so I’m pretty confident I can make a reasonable job of it….

However, really keen to get the right papers this time around for various reasons.

Quote still pending, but I think what I’ll end up doing is fitting conduit in the workshop/office, running all cable but not connecting it etc (incl the swa), and see if I can find someone to come and hook it all up ala morrisman above.

Don’t really know anyone in the building game at all, but maybe the data centre people at work know electricians who’d like to make extra money…

If not, I’ll have to put out a tender to you lot

I did all my own…..but about a year later we rebuilt the house from bare stone, so was all included on the certs for the house! Similar to Petes metal clad with drops in conduit. And a 32amp socket.

Here is the other consideration I have with stuff I do, I don't want to be doing it all again when I am 90, if I last that long, and all the oars are still in the water.

If your budget is really tight, you could fit 2-core SWA and use the armour as the PE. 16mm² 2-core is not much more expensive than 10mm² 3-core. Obviously do the calculations (the armour is higher resistance steel vs. copper), at 70m you may need a local PE rod anyway.

I paid 250 euros, in 2015 maybe when I had six 3-phase outlets added to my garage as it only had single phase from the start which was an unlivable situation. This was a simple job and cables are laying externally on the walls and the electrical box is on the garage anyway.

In 2013 I also paid to have my garage electrified as it was being built, with lights and switches. There where plans for it made by the builder, so I had the same company doing electrics on my house as it was being built to also to do the garage, t they charged around 1000€ I think, maybe a little more. This was 10 years ago mind you.

alot of what your reading up on is where people have messed with the mains incoming before the meter

after the meter its different with electric its not the same with gas and carbon monoxide

any competant person can wire in themselves as long as they buy right

the testing comes with the banks and another way to make money

the banks want an electric test and the tester will provide one with a charge planning also got involved as well so they also want another charge on top for silly little things like extra plugs being added

some of it is just a money making scam

A look at Part P will show you what you can and can't do without notifying the local building control. Providing the person undertaking the work is competent.

Notifiable work can be done but you have to jump through the hoops with the paperwork. Electricians registered with a body can shortcut this process.

only if u pay someone to do it and isnt registered and the job is a balls up and someone is injured then your liable for both . but even if u get someone who isnt registered and its a good job up to standard who is going to prosecute you for no reason

That's kind of what I was implying...but would still need to use the armour as PE in case of cable damage - just not terminate it at the garage.
