Really bad toilet flush...

Where I worked my mate a Sparky was one of the quietly funny types.
Donkeys years ago when the Brother Portable Labelling machines became affordable- we got one for Control Panel Labelling..

We came in one morning to find a simple small notice on the Thunderbox door....

"NOTICE! ALL TURDS HEAVIER THAN 4LB MUST BE LOWERED BY HAND".

It was around 1972 so I no cameras in phones or thoughts of sharing it.
It was far from the most insane thing in that place, it was a madhouse.

Well you cant say there is not a diversity of subjects on this forum still is the best site on the interwebb imho for a meeting of like minded shed hounds.

Id suggest a fairly high percentage of the population use a bog, most even flush too. Except for the odd folk, who choose to leave theirs dropped neatly on their bosses desk!

In the marine world vacumn toilets made by Lavac were common, I remember at college we had a tour of the Falmouth lifeboat & the Coxn told us of how they picked up some people from a sinking ship, one was very fat. He used the loo but pressed the operating button while still seated.
His buttocks made a perfect air tight seal & the vacumn caused a prolapse of his rectum.
He didnt say who got the job of putting it back.

We had one in our outside bog, the pivot arm broke in the 80's, the arm had Thomas Dudley cast into it and as the company wasn't too far I called in on the off chance they could help, the old chap behind the counter disappeared for a few minutes and came back with a dusty but identical arm, he said " we haven't made these since the 50's" and gave it to me gratis

I was asked to help sort out he toilet in a mid 1950 block of flats and shops , up stairs two flats had been turned into a hairdressing shop . The toilet had 8 flat edges around the rim , had a double syphon with a 3 gallon low connected flush water tank . When my nephew too it over it was always blocking up.

One day it was full to the brim of liquid **** & paper . I let him sort that one out with a hairy mop . Realised the problem was the double syphon and the shape of the pan. Went to a plumbers merchant and came back with a slightly taller pan & self closing lid and a straight concertina connection pipe .


Plenty of bleach and hot water went down it , then I chipped the mortared in plinth away , . turned the water off , disconnected it at the pan but it wouldn't come free .

There was what I though an asbestos outlet to the soil stack , hit it with a hammer and it dented . It turned out it was a half inch thick lead pipe I cut it at the wall with a coarse hacsaw blade wrapped in tape at one end . . Once cut though the pan came away with ease . New pan fitted and working I tried to opich the pan and lef pipe up to get it down th steep stair case . , had to get mark to helpme as it was tha t heavy . . Outside I smashed up the pan. the lead pipe was about 16 pounds heavy & had bee sealed with boss white or putty .
At the scrappies I was paid enough for Alison and I to have a Chinese meal in a local restaurant that night . Where there's muck there's money .

Oh and a top tip for anyone who does have a blocked bog - if you don't have a drain rod plunger use an old fashioned style hairy mop. Works wonders!

Use the mop inside a bin bag, it keeps the mop clean.
When you are finished pull the mop out of the bag and pull the bag inside out, meaning the poop us now inside the bag.

I just lob bleach down the bog, leave it a while & then flush again. Repeat if necessary. I refuse to have a bog brush in the flat.

Very good idea. I learnt the mop trick off my mate Tony Dynorod. No longer with us bless him.

I once used a length of SWA as a makeshift drain rod, stripped the first couple of inches and fanned out the wire armour to push the "blockage" out.

I vividly remember one job my mate dealt with. I was out of work so used to go out for joyrides with him. Interesting work on ships and all sorts. I used to keep out of the way of the smelly stuff!
Anyway he had a call to a council nursing home in Llanelli. Inner room no windows. Saniflow toilet blocked. Council wouldn't touch it. Saniflow engineer refused to fix it until cleared. It was full to the brim. The stuff was literally black due to medication.
I asked my mate how could he empty it. Pint glass and a bucket. I got them from the van for him and made a sharp exit!

The crazy thing was we often got called to a creamery in West Wales. Ultra modern very impressive. They made Clover butter there - remember the ads - it's English through and through
Anyway the pipes would often get blocked. I used to jet them - my mate couldn't cope with the smell
Oh and on the same packing line Tesco own brand - a lot cheaper than Clover!

Skidmarks. Fine if you live on your own, not so much if you come across them.

My two boys, 43 and 41, still leave skidmarks in the pan. My 13 year old grandson leaves giant skidmarks.
I didn't get the chance to teach my boys (she ******** off to Wales when they were very young).
I have tried with my grandson. Plenty of paper first (I learnt that from a Carry On film) and some tissue to clear the marks.

Toilet brushes are banned in our house.

Again, a couple of gallons of water from chain pull cistern gets rid of almost everything.

A handful of toilet paper, hand in the water, done.
Yes, I do wash my hands.
We're on a septic tank, so best not to use bleach.

If you wash it after use it stays clean, hold it in the flow of the water in a second flush if necessary.
Once a month soak the brush and holder in bleach to steralise it.
I'd never consider sticking my hand into the toilet pan under the water.

Because they're disgusting. No reason to stick a hand in, either. Bleach works, & is clean.
