Did you buy this when you could get them for peanuts?

I keep an eye every now and again on the classic hothatch market and buying one of these towards the end 90's when they were cheap would have been a reasonable investment as the price is getting pretty hot these days on them.

Or is it just a fact that there may be insurance issues if the house burnt down and it was found to be your fault?

It's more to do with safety of the occupants, how would you feel if spouse, kids etc were electrocuted by something you'd installed?

I take your point but in saying that no one should be aloud to work on there own car as that has far more potential for danger.

It all depends on the skill level, as a neighbour demonstrated when he asked me if I could have a look at a new rimlatch he had fitted to his front door. You couldn't shut the door without pushing the tongue in and when it did close it just swung open again, the tongue had to be turned over to match the side the door opened. A few minutes with a screwdriver and all was well.

THE HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICE STRIKE AGAIN who cares if people do there own thing in there own home as long as its wired correctly. theres jack sh..t building control can do about it unless u submit plans for approval eerrrm ive wired my own house without me doin g any paperwork. if i sell i may certify it christ the op just wants a new compressor and this post has turned in to a major debate [GET BACK ON topic ]

i paid £1900 5yr ago for a genuine rough diamond.. It may be worth 10k in a few yrs or I'll plough 10 and it be worth 5, for me its about the breed its a love not an investment its sentimental to me sadly so value im not worried..

but definately alot of folk wanna relieve youth, motors are a good asset imop, i know id pay good money for a bit of it back haha

Had a rough spark round tonight, he's had a look and been very helpfull so it can be done very simply but best of all properly so hopefully i can do 40amp and get a more capable unit.

Yeah it's all about the love for most people. There weren't that many Fiesta RS turbos, if you compare it to say how 205 gti's for instance. It's partly surprising the value of 205 GTI's considering how many are still around but I feel this much to do with a press induced frenzy for the last few years which has fuelled the values rising and the potential of them being appreciating classic which has also in reality been fuelled by the press. It's not a bad thing few are now getting wrecked by kids modifying them.

I doubt very few Fiesta RS turbos are getting lowered to 1mm off the ground with a show roll cage and 18" alloys these days. I would guess if anything major being done to them these days will restorations with minimal if not no modifications.

What will be interesting in a few years is to see what happens to ST versions of Fords? Will they get the classic badge like the RS/cosworths etc do? Could well do as even XR3's are loved now and they were a dirty word by late 80's so things could be looking up for ST models.

Rubbish. This sort of thinking is the reason that the UK has become a second rate uncompetative country. We employ more people to manage health and safety than we do to actually do the work......

There is no law preventing you from doing anything to your property that you wish. This includes plumbing and wiring, knocking walls down and got knows what else you fancy. Where do you have an issue is when you come to sell the house you will need to provide the relevant paperwork for any work you have done after the relevant regs or your buyers will either walk away or give you a battering on the price. Secondly there is the insurance side, there is a difference between having the correct paperwork which is only relevant as I mentioned above and bidding something in which is dangerous. If you bodge something in then there is a claim as a result of it you would have an interesting argument with the insurance company I would imagine.

I have done all the wiring in my house over the years including all the 32amp feeds to the workshop and my electrician brother in law has always commented on how I have exceeded the requirements rather than cut corners. He tells me they would put in the absolute minimum required in order to maximise profit on the job. I prefer to make sure my installations are bullet proof.

i am not for a moment suggesting someone without a clue undertakes the work but if you are switched on and know what you are doing then its not rocket science.

Adding to what Mr Shiney said you can also as a DIYer submit major changes to your local council building control to get it passed off. Once the building control pass it off you are totally covered.

An irrelevant link. It governs new build and professional work, not what you can do in your own home. As I said above your home is your castle, the issue would be on resale. I have this confirmed by a lawyer.

I also did some searching some time ago regarding gas plumbing and what I found was that a competent home owner could infact plumb gas, but only in his own house to do it anywhere else its illegal, but there is no actual guidelines as to what a competent person is, obviously it is someone that will do the job safely but there are no guidelines anywhere, also you could do your electrical work and try to get a sparky to sign it off. im sure there will be some out there that will test and sign things of as its income to them

but again how is that to be interpreted, if I can wire up a house perfectly with no problems then I am electrically skilled (I have the skills to do it), not a professional or qualified

Correct, I think they are tightening up definitions as they regs are generally used as "the bible" when something goes to court.
