Its possible that its stainless I suppose, but I have never seen a stock Mercedes exhaust pipe made from stainless steel and I have seen a fair few in my time.

have you had the car from new ? what merc is it ?

no, but the system is defo 10% stock.

Stick a magnet against it, if its stainless it wont stick to it.

Is it possible to weld mild to stainless?

Anything is possible! get some stainless mig wire, it shouldn't be a problem. I've welded mild with stainless wire many times. I think you will need argon too, Co2 on stainless is no good.

I have never seen flux core stainless wire, but there are many more experienced welders on here may tell you different. I would get some argon, it will be so much neater and easier, get a hobby bottle if you don't have many joints to do.

True, just me being cheap, seing as I just bought 2 hobby co2 bottles.

Not the end of the world I suppose.

Thats an expensive way of doing it, beg, borrow or steel! a co2 bottle from a pub, its only about £15 to have them filled with co2. I think trimix gases are best for mild to ss, argon, co2 and helium, have a read in the shielding gas section, there is bound to be something in there about it.

Those who are saying insufficient weld power... I'd have thought position 5 out of 6 and 60-70% wire speed on a 140A set would be the thick end of 120A, surely more than enough to weld even 1mm wall pipe?

It was 3mm steel and there was a 2mm gap between the pipes when starting off.
