Reactolite glasses

I wear reactolite glasses all the time, but I'm finding it hard to see what I'm welding, so does anyone else have the same problem?. I wonder if I would be better just getting a cheap pair of reading glasses for welding or a cheater lens, all suggestions greatly received

Readers, better lens quality than a cheater lens

I always use a cheater lens in my speedglas helmet.

Not got one fitted to my Optrel mask fitted to a hardhat.

i cant use my varifocals when welding. Most opticians have a buy one get one free, so I got a pair of close up reading glasses which I use.

Summer - misting up (sweat) - winter (change of temp).

Must get worse with an air fed mask and the face seal.


I struggle more with keeping the Tig tungsten out of an ally weld pool. I have given up with ally welding nearly due to this. It is easier to get one of the young lads who work for me to do it - than spend more time grinding up the tungsten.

i also make sure the glasses arnt dark when i put a mask on

I've got the opisst problem to you I can se perfect with my glasses on but when wearing them I have no depth perception so I've decided to do without when doing anything like that

Cheater lenses have really poor refractive and optical quality in my experience.

If you need glasses, get them. Your welding will improve massively.

The amount of people I’ve had, trying to teach them, and explaining what I’m seeing in the weldpool, and they’re like I can’t see anything like that. Then you ask do you wear reading glasses and they say yes!

“Did you bring them?”

“No.”

Had people booked for half day or whole day of training, basically a complete waste of time if they can’t see what they’re doing.

Go to a different colour lens. I weld ally better with a dark green lens. On steel or stainless I use a light blue lens.

I used to wear reactolite glasses, but I found my eyes had got really sensitive to light. The glasses never went totally clear/un-tinted, so they were always slightly dark.

Stopped having them at the next prescription and my eyes soon seemed to recover.

We on my way to work I stopped at Asda and got a pair of +3 reading glasses got the grand total of a tenner.
So had a go on the welder and my god it is so much better, I can now see close up like I did years ago so I will put my problem down to the vari focal reactalite specs.
Only downside I will be changing glasses all day now.
Anyways thanks for the input I appreciate it

I think it’s the reactalite bit that is my problem not the varifocal lense, but saying that I have only had reactaltes tbh

Mine is reactolite...i never really thought about it much...i will do now though.

I use a pair of 1.5 pound shop reading glasses for welding and general shed work nowadays and find them perfect for close up work.

I use pound shop glasses from 1.5 to 4.0, reading to "squinting glasses", 2.0 are good when machining / welding but soldering etc needs stronger... Old age, eh?

Poundshop or ebay no more than 2 quid glasses too. Varifocals are no good for me, the reader bit is too near the bottom of the glasses, i'd end up with a burnt neck if I lifted my head up enough to see through them.

No misting at all with airfed

Why?? I wear varifocals. ..

I find with my varifocals, when working close up, and my head is at an angle, unless I'm looking ahead, my vision is outside the 'sweet spot' and things are blurred.

My BIL was in the army & went to Belize for a few weeks training. That was when he discovered the drawback of his trendy reactions glasses - due to the jungle heat they stayed permanently dark - not so good in an already dark jungle. Taking them off wasn't an option either as he is very short sighted!
