Re-spooling wire?

Is there any particular technique/knack to transferring 0.8mm wire from a 15Kg reel to a 5Kg one?. I can mount the 5Kg reel in the lathe and have the 15Kg reel mounted with a tiny bit of friction close by, I realise its not going to end up "precision wound" but does it really matter too much, And what sort of speed have your found to work best?
( I picked up a couple of reels of Lincoln Supra ER70-6 at the local welding supply place for £5-00 each)
Only reason they might have been cheap was they were on the wire basket spools, but I have a centre for them anyway.

i made a stand for my 15kg roll and wired it into the mig welder using a kids bicycle brake wire holder just dont earth the wire to the sides of the welder as it can do it

The Butters 215 and the Lorch that I have will both take 15Kg reels but I would like to re-fill a couple of 5Kg reels for use in the EWM Pico,

Yes it is make a winding jig like used to fill fishing reels with hundreds of yards of line

If you've ever had a poorly wound roll of wire you would know how much cursing it brings and the amount of wire that burns back to the tip you'll soon realise its not worth the bother,

Yep badly wound wire can cause you a world of pain, birds nests, feeding issues and even twisted wire shooting out the mig tip and going off squint. Buy some known brand quality wound 5Kg rolls. United welding sell Italian novofil for 11 quid a roll last time I bought.

i have only re-wound a .7kg reel before but when i did it i made an arbor for my cordless drill, then would it on slow speed and guided the wire on by hand so it was fairly neat...it worked ok but took a while so i can imagine 5kg to take hours

No chance of remotely mounting the 15kg spool? Less work all round.

Re-spooling is only something i fancy trying, it would also be handy to have the 5Kg reels to use when i take a smaller mig set to work away from home

my advice use a power drill battery operated and use a piece of wood with a hole in it either have it within a sliding bar so you can move side to side on the bar and the roll will self roll and also spread out along it

the 2 videos will give you an idea of what can be done
