I've got a very nice unused Elliott Fortis 160mm all-steel chuck that is missing the outside jaws. Normally I put a search on eBay and just wait for something to come along (I waited a year and a half for my TOS chuck jaws and got new ones for £50) but I'm thinking that the chuck I have is so uncommon that I'll never be able to find a set for it. I;ve been searching probably a couple of years already.
I've been doing some research and found that 160mm Bison jaws are very close to the size of the Elliott ones. Here's a comparison chart:
The most important dimensions are L, B, E and D.
L must be correct of course, it has to match the scroll pitch. That is the same for both types.
B is the jaw width, the Bison jaws are 0.2mm wider so I can surface grind those
E is the tenon slot width. Again I can surface grind that out from 8mm to 8.4mm
D is the distance from tenon slot to bottom of scroll (less clearance) Thankfully I need to decrease that from 8mm to 7.63mm which is the way I need it.
So what I'm looking at is getting a set of Bison jaws, grinding both sides 0.1mm to bring the width down to fit the Fortis slot then working out which direction I need to grind the tenon slots in order to get the correct width slot at the correct distance from the scroll.
What do you think the chances are of this being successful?
