I had a leaking heater matrix in my Mk1 Escort 1100 back in '81. I removed the matrix but carried on removing everything else from the car until it was just a bare shell. 6 months later it went back on the road as an RS2000 complete with a working heater.

Cortinas were the same open the bonnet remove two hose's undo two screw's and pull out the matrix.

They couldn't have been made any easier for access, had one or two of those out in the day.

Yebbut, it was also the first one to kill the occupants with a heater fault.

That would seem to be a fairly straightforward way of acquiring a phosphoric/citric acid mix for de-rusting components... ?

Won’t be a cheap way at VW prices though

Buy citric acid from Ebay or Amazon by the Kg and make up with water as needed, could not be cheaper or easier.

Edit: Not kind to aluminium though so I think I would stick to a product sold for flushing cooling systems and follow the instructions to the letter.

I buy citric by the 10Kg carton from ebay, and find it excellent for de-rusting stuff, but was lead to believe that phosphoric acid left a finish that didn't flash rust in the way that citric can do.
And the liquid that Seadog referred to isn't a VW product, it's a product (Kamco FX2) designed to flush out central heating systems (but not ones with aluminium rads).

Phosphoric leaves a dark grey finish that is stable for a few days at least unlike, as you say, citric and, for that matter, vinegar.
