i have 4 shovels 2 oldies and 2 modern ones . the modern ones are heavy and made of crap mild steel . they bend easily lifting paving slabs up so I use the oldies that are lighter and thinner made of a decent steel probably spring as they don't bend . there over 60 years old as they were my fathers the wooden handles had gone so I managed to pick one up for 7 quid from autojumble . knocked the old one off and went to fit new one it was longer and the taper wasn't rite so cut 4 inch of it got the plane out and tapered it near enough then finished on the belt sander its now good as new and the cutting edge is like a razor blade
