Re clarke 185e mig welder

Hi all just joined up here this is my first post so go easy on me .I am currently trying to restore a vw Scirocco gtx for trackday and road fun,i have a bit of welding i need to do before i a) fit the fuel system b) get it mot`ed here is the offending arch.
None of my friends have suitable welders ,and i am currently bidding on a clarke 185e Question is am i going to be able to run this on my home power supply,and will it be low powered enough to weld paper thin german metal ?
Have done some welding before ,had to weld in captive nut plates for the safety devices roll cage borrowed off a neighbour who has moved away now

That's an old model (15 years +) so don't go bidding stupid as major spares will now be a problem. Decent middle of the road set though which will go down low enough & up to around 150amps before popping household fuses (you won't get near that on bodywork).

good to see another scirocco owner,,still got a mk2 scala injection in the shed ,which needs some work ,it was my daily driver for 6 years,until i had engine problems ,bought a mk1 golf cab,to replace it ,couldn't bring myself to get rid of rocco,so there it sits waiting for my garage to be built ,i also have a kit car in bits waiting for the garage .golf is nice but rocco is too........same engine of course,what mods do u intend to do ?still got some body parts off a gtx i cut up with a 9"grinder

Quality another rocco fan ! it`s been an ongoing project for the last 3 years,self employed and the tax man just keeps taking my money before i can spend it on the car !
so far it`s had 6 point roll cage , kent gs2h camshaft,kent vernier pully,new belt tensioner and tappets,K+N filter,all new rear brakes inc copper pipes and goodridge hoses.
In the back will be a custom made alloy fuel tank,a swirl pot a facet red top pump standard injection pump and accumalator ,custom made s/steel fuel lines.Uprated rear suspension,and a front strut brace.That`s as far as i have got have plans for a full performance exhaust system inc manifold but yor talking about £500 which is more than i can buy another car for !

Hi Mr D.

Star-maker welding in waterbeach (cambs) have a couple of small sets they hire out occasionally; bit grumpy though. Fowlmere welding are a much better place to deal with but i dont think they hire stuff. Hope this helps!

Nice to see another rocco being rescued. I had 1.8 CL or GL years ago, it was a much better car to drive than the golf gti i had later! Theres a helpful forum if you want bits n bobs - search scirocco register.

Tried them Star-maker last year and yes they were really grumpy on the phone ! not how i run my business,would not get any work if i was like that ! When i was 18 back in 1988 i had a Mk 1 gti w plate,was far far to quick for an inexperienced young driver,it was fully tuned up by a bloke called Peter Baldwin,who now does r/road tuning at Wimpole he is a K/jet master !
Had Koni suspension all round and that was set on the hardest setting,Hit a big puddle coming back from fendrayton one night and aquaplaned span round 3 times hit an eletrick pole which broke half way up and came down on the front of the car,i smashed the driverrs side window with my head and my passenger ended up behind me as his seat bent ! copper thought he was going to need body bags ,so was v lucky.
Few years later i bought a 1.6 gls which was a very problematic car allways going wrong,still didn`t put me off though !
I am a member of the scirocco register,club gti,fendubbers,scirocco world,and e38,all vw forums and very helpfull..
I think there may be a place in Brampton but can`t remember the name or if they hire , i know they do spares and consumables though.Cheers for the replys

Well i bit the bullet and have just ordered a clarke pro 90 from machine mart ! the one i was bidding on on e bay is up to £80 now and i am not prepared to pay that for a 15 yr old machine,should be here tomorrow ,will be putting in a fan to keep things cool
