Re bar

ive got two lots of 6mm bar, one is re bar and the other plain old mild steel, but not exactly sure.

Last night I was trying to bend some to make a hook type implement. The ordinary steel went over quite nicely without too much effort, but I had to get the rebar red hot and persuade it with a big hammer

What's the possible difference between the two?

I thought re bar was twisted?? May be wrong though.

The stuff I've got isn't twisted but definitely has some sort of textured, rippled finish

What I should have said is why was one easier to bend than the other

From what I understand rebar is usually a high carbon steel made from different scrap metal and is quite stiff probably from the deforming, and the stuff I have used in the past usually snaps when I tried to bend it too much.

It's designed to flex but not bend, so when it's in concrete it doesn't just fail under pressure etc.

I've bent 16mm cold with a cheater pipe on it with one end fixed through a hole in a handy rsj.

The rough finish is to stop it pulling through the concrete when it has set, to give a more solid support when used as separate parralel rods
when formed into mesh it doesnt need the rough finish.
I was always under the impression it's makeup was similar to spring steel

I used to work at a foundry and rolling mill and rebar was made to the customers specification in several different grades, higher carbon and chrome.

There is definitely something different as it's much harder to cut and bend than regular bar of the same diameter
