Rattling aux belt tensioner

I can't see this happening, cambelts usually have a cover...

Yeah had a look whilst under there, mine is fully covered hence why it wasn't a problem when aux snapped

The cam belt could really do with changing but Haynes / ford suggest you need a clavis guage?
Anyone changed one on 1.8di it is the turbo diesel with the crank and oil pump linked by chain and the cam belt joins oil pump and camshaft, is this guage really needed? I know oem and haynes often suggest things that aren't needed or there are easier ways of doing things

a clavis gauge is for setting the tension (it uses the harmonic frequency of the tight belt). If its an automatic tensioner why would you need to know the tension?
if you know the formula ( T= 4ml^2f^2) you could use a guitar tuner in theory

The aux belt is auto,think he's talking cam belt now.

Just do it so it feels correct. Better to have a new belt slightly slack than an old one under tension.
You can also use reference marks on cam/crank to help gauge tension.

Usually occurs right at the crank pulley,and on engines with plastic cambelt covers.
