Rattle can the boot area. Where to buy?

I'll be looking to paint my boot area with rattle cans soon, but I'm not sure where to look for my specific colour.

I'm thinking of BMW Marrakesh brown (or something around that shade) but couldn't find the colour in halfords. I've never undertaken anything like this before, so where should I be looking to buy this?

Also, what colour primer should I be using underneath such a colour? I'm painting it over a rattle can stonechip which is over paintable and black, but if I need another colour, I'll coat it with a normal primer so it's the right colour.

Google automotive paint suppliers in your local area. There is likely one on a local industrial park. They should be able to fill cans to the correct colour code. Google should help find that too. I'm sorry but i cannot help with primer colours but would imagine it's grey. They can recommend when you order.

And as been stated,once you find the colour code a car paint supplier should be able to knock up a couple of cans with the code,thats providing the colour is original factory colour?

If you know the colour you like, Halfords can make it up from paint code....

I've had cans from there when I did my nova, decent match (not metallic though)

any local paint supplier will be able to match it for you, just take along the car or if not on the road the fuel flap and they will sort you out.

You don't need to prime your stonechip, you can go straight over it if its fresh or scuffed up with a grey scotchbrite if its been on a while. Colour of stonechip/primer is not really that critical so your dark colour will work on your black stonechip. The most critical are your strong primary colours and to a degree strong secondary's. Primary's, I would use a white base for yellow, and black base for reds and blues. The crossover in the spectrum seems to be around the light green shade. White for light and black for dark.
Any help? Supplier wise, its more about the quality of your prep and less about the quality of the paint.

It's a BMW individual colour. I'm painting a project car, so don't have a piece to take in.

I'm using black aerosol stonechip, so brown should be fine over the top going by what Norsa has said.

nice colour dude. Forgive me if I seem to state the obvious but that looks like a metallic and as such you will need a clearcoat (lacquer) as well as the colour coat. Its going to get a little expensive doing a boot area in rattle cans. Wondering if you may be better off hiring borrowing stealing a little compressor and getting a cheap.bay gun mate.

I could probably borrow a little 25l one from the unit next door. I wasn't planning on clearing the boot or wheel arches etc. Or would metallic need a lacquer over the top regardless? I've never done anything like this before. How hard can it be??? (Famous last words!!)

thats what these forums are for mate and this one is one of the best. Yes if you go metallic, you will need to clearcoat it as the base colour is almost matt finish. 25l compressor will do a better job for you than rattle cans. we can help you which ever way you decide to do it but there are rules to car painting and you need to follow the rules to get the best out of it. A lot of novice sprayers on here ask for advice but only use some of it then come back and wonder wtf went wrong.

If it's in the boot and you are going for a standard look manufacturers don't lacquer any of the bits you don't see these days, in the boot or under the bonnet.

I must stress that I won't be painting the bits that need to be perfect. I'll leave that to a pro.

I have some Hammerite stonechip shield in black. I'll key it up the best I can, use some upol degreaser (which feels greasy funnily enough!), then a coat of Bilt Hambers hydrate 80 rust converter (on any areas I had trouble getting perfectly bright steel).

A coat of stinechip, then a coat or two of the colour. Finishing off with a coat of clear. That sound ok?

Another trick is to mix some lacquer and hardener into the basecoat. Gives a sheen but not too shiny.

You don't want to be painting on top of de greaser, you need panel wipe. Don't know what hammerite stonechip is but most of their products are synthetic and therefore not compatible with your chosen media. Best check.

I've heard of some paints not compatible with other types of paint. I'll check the tins but is there a guide to follow as to what goes with what type of paint?

Or can anyone recommend an over paintable stone chip, or any other suitably tough paint to go underneath the colour? I thought the stonechip would be handy for most of the cars hidden areas.

generaly avoid anything with hammerite on the tin , although if it say overpaintable then its prob okay

upol products can be trusted and are available everywhere
